Jane McDonald, beloved TV presenter and singer, has bravely opened up about the profound grief that continues to shape her life since the death of her fiancé, Eddie Rothe, in 2021. Speaking in a raw and emotional interview with Bella Magazine, Jane admits that “not a day goes by” without thinking of Eddie, and the loss has had an overwhelming impact on her daily existence.
“Grief Never Leaves You”
Jane’s heartbreaking words paint a picture of enduring love and loss, as she reflects on life after Eddie’s death, which followed a battle with lung cancer. Eddie passed away in March 2021 at the age of 67, and his absence still looms large in Jane’s heart. When asked by Bella Magazine if she still misses having someone to share her life with, Jane’s voice faltered: “Of course I do. There’s not a day goes by that I don’t think of Eddie, talk of him – it’s awful.”
The “brave smile” that viewers often see in Jane hides the immense grief she continues to carry. She candidly admitted, “Grief stays with you all the time. But what you have to do is sit it beside joy. You have to bring as much joy into your life as humanly possible, so that you feel more joy than the grief. I’m just about level now.”
Finding Comfort in New Beginnings
Despite the heartbreak, Jane has chosen to move forward, embracing a new chapter in her life. Every morning, she starts her day with a mantra, reminding herself to stay positive no matter the weight of her emotions. “Life is short,” she said. “It’s not a dress rehearsal.” Her resilience shines through as she finds peace in the joy of continuing to work, bringing happiness to others through her travel shows and music.
Jane’s newest project, Pole to Pole, takes her on an unforgettable journey from Antarctica to the Arctic, offering her fans a chance to see the world through her eyes. The show premieres on Channel 5 tonight at 9 PM, while her upcoming album Living the Dream is available for pre-order, alongside her 2026 tour tickets already on sale.
A Change of Home and Heart
In the years since Eddie’s passing, Jane made the difficult decision to sell her £1 million Yorkshire bungalow — a place filled with painful memories. The home, where she lived for 18 years, was where she and Eddie had created many memories. “There was too much history there,” Jane explained, reflecting on her need for a fresh start. She has since moved into a smaller home nearby, while also purchasing a bolt-hole by the sea for moments of peace and reflection.
Jane’s lifelong friend and former Celebrity Gogglebox co-star, Sue Ravey, moved in with her after Eddie’s passing. “She’s still my bezzie mate,” Jane smiled, speaking fondly of their continued close bond.
Love and Peace with the Past
Though Jane feels no pressure to find love again, she expressed gratitude for the love she shared with Eddie, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime connection. “The joy and laughter we shared was second to none,” she said, content in knowing that she had experienced true love.
As Jane continues to honor Eddie’s memory, she also focuses on creating new memories and embracing the life she has now. “Grief never leaves you,” she shared, but she remains determined to balance it with joy — for herself and her fans.
