Vernon Kay Insists Daughters Must “Graft” for Success as Family Dynamic Evolves
Vernon Kay has said his daughters will not rely on their famous parents’ influence, as he opens up about parenting, independence and the challenges of raising young women in today’s world.
Vernon Kay has made clear that his daughters with wife Tess Daly will be expected to build their own futures, despite growing up in the spotlight.
The BBC Radio 2 presenter, 51, shares daughters Phoebe, 21, and Amber, 16, with the former Strictly Come Dancing host. Speaking candidly in a recent interview, Kay reflected on how their family dynamic is shifting as both daughters move towards adulthood.

“Now that Phoebe is 21 and Amber is nearly 17, our relationship with them is changing,” he said. “We talk about encouraging them to leave the nest and become independent, but we don’t really want them to.”
Kay emphasised that he and Daly have always instilled the importance of hard work, making it clear their daughters will not be “nepo babies” — a term often used to describe children who benefit from their parents’ fame or connections.

Instead, he said, both Phoebe and Amber are encouraged to “go out and graft” for their ambitions.
Phoebe, currently studying film production, has already begun building her own profile online, sharing aspects of her lifestyle with a growing audience. She has also stepped into the public eye, attending high-profile events such as the premiere of John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2023.

Despite these opportunities, Kay insists exposure does not equate to entitlement.
“We’re not going to give them everything,” he said, underlining the family’s approach to independence and self-reliance.
The presenter also spoke about the emotional realities of parenting older teenagers, admitting that watching his daughters navigate modern social life brings new anxieties.
Reflecting on Phoebe’s first experiences of going out, he acknowledged concerns about issues such as drink spiking — dangers he said were less prominent during his own youth.
“You have to learn to enter their world,” he explained. “And that world has pitfalls that just didn’t exist for us.”
While maintaining a firm stance on independence, Kay also shared moments of pride as a father. After Phoebe completed her A-Levels, he took her on a celebratory trip to Ibiza — a luxury getaway that included beach clubs, high-end hotels and time spent with internationally known DJs.
The trip, which was documented on social media, highlighted the close bond between father and daughter, even as Kay continues to stress the importance of earning success.
As Phoebe and Amber step further into adulthood, the Kay household is navigating a familiar balancing act — offering support while encouraging independence.
For Vernon Kay, the message is clear: while fame may open doors, it will not define his daughters’ future.
