Torvill & Dean Receive Knighthood and Damehood at Windsor Castle
Iconic ice dancers Dame Jayne Torvill and Sir Christopher Dean were celebrated at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, receiving the honours of damehood and knighthood in a ceremony attended by high-profile figures including Sir Idris Elba and Dame Meera Syal.
The pair, forever remembered for their historic “Bolero” routine at the 1984 Winter Olympics, recently concluded a farewell UK tour that ended in their hometown of Nottingham last July. Reflecting on their final performances, Dame Jayne, 68, said: “It was a mixture of emotions, but we were so happy to have done that tour. You always want to give a good performance, and we felt that show was one of our best.”

Sir Christopher, 67, added: “To put a tour like that together takes about a year and a half of preparation, so the thought that this is the final performance is always in the back of your mind. But we feel like we’ve achieved everything we set out to, and it was great to end on our own terms.”
During the ceremony, the duo shared a light-hearted moment with King Charles, who quipped about whether they were still skating. Sir Christopher responded: “We’ve retired, and I recommend it,” prompting laughter from the monarch.

A minor mix-up occurred when Dame Jayne received her damehood a few days before Sir Christopher’s letter arrived, causing a brief awkward moment, which she recalled with amusement.
Beyond their Olympic feats, Torvill and Dean have influenced generations of skaters through Dancing On Ice, inspiring celebrities and viewers alike. Dame Jayne noted: “It’s lovely to see people still skating years later—Sam Aston, Chesney from Coronation Street—they still love it. We’ve had so many follow their own ice journey.”

Other notable honourees at Tuesday’s ceremony included 93-year-old Betty Brown, a survivor of the Post Office Horizon IT scandal, comedy legend Paul Elliott of the Chuckle Brothers, and distinguished royal surgeons Professor Philip Bloom and Simon Eccles.
Sir Christopher concluded: “It’s amazing to be here, in this setting, with all the tradition and ceremony—it’s a wonderful day.”
Torvill and Dean’s Olympic legacy is now complemented by royal recognition, highlighting a lifetime of brilliance both on and off the ice. ✨
