In an emotional and heart-wrenching update, Paula Hudgell, the devoted adoptive mother of hero Tony Hudgell, has bravely shared her journey of survival and hope after undergoing life-saving surgery. In what she described as the most brutal procedure of her life, Paula, 58, has fought through unimaginable pain and exhaustion to reclaim a chance at life.

Paula, who has become a tireless advocate for child welfare since adopting Tony—who was left with catastrophic injuries as a baby due to the cruelty of his birth parents—underwent intensive HIPEC and CRS surgery, followed by a hernia repair. This procedure was vital after her bowel cancer spread to her peritoneal lining. In a raw and vulnerable post shared with her followers, she admitted the first week of recovery felt insurmountable. Every step she took was filled with agony and fear, yet she forced herself to walk again and again, despite the overwhelming pain. These painful, short walks became her lifeline, helping her push through the darkest of days.

In a deeply personal Instagram post, Paula shared a photo of herself with Tony, her face partially obscured by a black headscarf. She spoke candidly about the quiet days she spent recovering from the grueling surgery, acknowledging the trauma and emotional toll. Despite everything, Paula expressed that the fight was worth it. After 12 days of intense recovery, she was finally able to return home to be with her family.

The news wasn’t all bleak. Amid the physical and emotional strain, Paula was given a ray of hope. Test results from that very day revealed a solitary nodule, with no cancer detected elsewhere in the areas and organs removed. She couldn’t hold back her tears of relief, calling the news “the best we could hope for at this stage.” It was a moment of sheer joy in an otherwise devastating situation.

Embracing His Motto Every Day: Tony Will “Never, Ever Give Up”

However, Paula knows this battle is far from over. The family is bracing for the next challenge—lung nodules. Paula will undergo a CT scan soon, with a follow-up call from her oncologist to determine the next steps. If surgery isn’t an option, it will be back to chemotherapy. As she said, “Either way, we keep going.” It’s this resilience, her refusal to give up, that has become the hallmark of her incredible journey.

Paula’s health journey has been a long and tumultuous one. She was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2022 after years of being misdiagnosed. Symptoms were repeatedly dismissed as IBS or menopause, and by the time doctors discovered the tumour, it had already spread through the bowel wall. Despite initial optimism after surgery and chemotherapy, the cancer returned with a vengeance, spreading to her lung and abdominal lining. She was devastated to learn that it had reached stage-four, but Paula has never been one to back down from a fight. In July of last year, she vowed to take on this battle with everything she had, sharing the shocking news of her diagnosis but pledging to fight like never before.

Beyond her personal battle, Paula has become a symbol of strength and resilience to many, especially through her advocacy work that led to Tony’s Law. This landmark legislation, which increased the maximum prison sentence for those who cause serious harm or death to a child, is a testament to Paula’s unyielding commitment to justice. In 2022, her tireless campaigning earned her an OBE, further cementing her place as an inspiration to many.

As Paula continues her battle, she has made sure to thank the medical team who have supported her through it all. Their care and compassion have given her something priceless: more time with the people she loves. The messages of support have poured in, with celebrity figures such as Zoe Ball and fashion designer Karen Millen sharing their love and prayers.

But it is Paula’s love for her family, especially Tony, that has kept her going through every setback. In a deeply emotional moment, Paula revealed that the most heartbreaking part of her illness has been the impact it has had on Tony. The young boy, who has overcome unimaginable obstacles in his life, has been worried about his ‘Mummy,’ telling his teacher that he is scared she won’t be okay. Paula has kept the truth about her terminal illness from him, knowing that, to Tony, people always survive. She wants to protect that belief for as long as she can.

Tony’s resilience has inspired millions. Despite the unimaginable trauma he endured as a baby, he has flourished under the care of Paula and her family. He has learned to walk on prosthetic legs, raised over £1.8 million for children’s charities, and received a Pride of Britain award. His strength and courage have won him the admiration of not only the public but also Prince William and Kate, the Princess of Wales.

For now, Paula’s journey continues, filled with moments of hope, heartbreak, and resilience. Her message to the world is clear: no matter how hard the fight gets, the Hudgells will keep going. Together, they’ll face whatever comes their way.
