Pete Wicks, former TOWIE star and Strictly contestant, has revealed in a candid interview that he “prefers dogs to people,” especially after filming his emotional documentary, Pete Wicks: For Dogs’ Sake. The 36-year-old star, known for his love of French bulldogs, Eric and Peggy, couldn’t hold back the tears while making the documentary, which focuses on the lives of rescue dogs and the heartache many experience after a rough start in life.
Speaking to The Radio Times, Pete explained how the experience of witnessing the transformation of these dogs had a profound impact on him. “It might sound harsh, but it’s true—I prefer dogs to people. I don’t think you realise how much dogs will change things until you have one,” Pete confessed, reflecting on the emotional moments captured during the filming process.

Pete’s deep connection with rescue animals began at an early age, with his family adopting a dog, Arnie, when he was just 10. His passion for animal rescue only grew, leading him to adopt Eric in 2016 from the Dogs Trust in Basildon. The documentary, airing on January 7, is a four-part series that shines a light on the 100,000 dogs currently in UK rescue centres. He added, “It’s estimated that only one in five people who get a dog, get a rescue.”
