In a shocking revelation, Matt Baker, beloved Countryfile presenter and a staple of British television, opens up about the devastating health battle that forced him to give up his lifelong dream — competing in the Olympics. A journey that began with breathtaking gymnastics routines and hopes of representing his country, suddenly came to an abrupt halt, leaving fans and the star himself heartbroken.
From an early age, Matt’s life seemed destined for greatness. Growing up on a farm, his passion for gymnastics sparked early, driven by a raw determination to be the best. By the age of 14, he was already making headlines after achieving a perfect 10 in a national competition, showing off his incredible skill and determination. It seemed like nothing could stop him, not even the challenges that stood in the way of most young athletes.
But fate had other plans. In an emotional confession, Matt reveals the moment his dreams came crashing down. “Ever since I was a little lad, it was my dream to be part of the Olympics,” he shared in 2025. “But I ended up having to stop gymnastics in my mid-teens because I got anaemia. It meant I just couldn’t train at the level needed, and I made the heartbreaking decision to stop.”
The crushing diagnosis of anaemia, a condition that affects the blood’s ability to carry oxygen, left Matt unable to continue his rigorous training. It was a devastating blow for the young athlete, who had already worked so hard to build a career in the sport he loved. The dreams of competing on the world stage were now out of reach.
However, the story doesn’t end there. Instead of succumbing to despair, Matt found another outlet for his physical energy. Despite the setback, he continued practicing gymnastics as a form of stress relief. “I’m very physical, and I have to do two or three good sessions a week, or I get really wound up,” he said. “I do handstands, backflips at home, and have crash mats and climbing ropes in the trees. It’s my way of keeping that energy in check.”
Yet, Matt’s true calling was still waiting for him, though it came in an unexpected form. His path to stardom was far from planned — in fact, it was almost accidental. It all began when Matt was cast as a stunt double for a school production of Grease. What started as a temporary role turned into a revelation. Matt was captivated by the world of performance, and suddenly, he knew where his future lay. “I never actually wanted to be a TV presenter,” he confessed. “It just sort of happened. I was a British champion gymnast when I was younger, and somehow ended up in a college production of Grease — doing backflips as a stuntman for one of the lead parts. When the lead actor got sick, I ended up taking his role.”

This pivotal moment led Matt to drama school, where his destiny as a TV personality truly began to unfold. It wasn’t long before his natural talent and undeniable charisma caught the attention of producers, and soon, he was starring in iconic shows like Blue Peter, The One Show, and of course, Countryfile.
But as Matt now reflects on his career, there’s no denying the price he paid for the career that found him — a young man’s Olympic dream shattered, but replaced by a new passion that would take him to the top of the television world.
“I always think about what could have been, but the reality is that my life turned out in ways I never imagined,” he says. And today, that life is one many envy.
Matt’s journey from heartache to stardom is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. His story shows that even when life takes a sharp turn, dreams can still be realized — just in ways we never expected. His determination to continue pursuing his passions, despite the setbacks, is the true symbol of strength.
