Lorraine Kelly’s Daughter Rosie Opens Up About Postpartum Anxiety: “I Couldn’t Control the Fear”
Rosie Smith, daughter of TV host Lorraine Kelly, has bravely shared her struggles with postpartum anxiety following the birth of her daughter Billie in August 2024. Speaking candidly about her experience on The Netmums Podcast, Rosie revealed how intrusive thoughts and overwhelming fears left her struggling to cope with the early days of motherhood.
“I was sobbing for about three or four weeks, that uncontrollable, can’t breathe kind of crying,” Rosie confessed, describing the intense emotions she felt during those first weeks. “I was convinced that something was going to happen to Steve [her fiancé]—I didn’t think he was going to die, I just thought someone was going to harm him—and I had the same fears about Billie.”
The new mum also revealed how her anxiety led her to track Steve’s location whenever he left the house and even told her mother that she needed “a cricket bat” for protection in case something happened. Her fears became all-consuming, leaving her feeling trapped in a constant state of dread.
Lorraine, deeply concerned for her daughter, encouraged Rosie to move back home to be closer to her parents and away from the stress of London. Though initially unable to travel due to physical pain, Rosie eventually accepted her mum’s offer, feeling relief from being supported by her family.
Reflecting on the experience, Rosie expressed gratitude for Lorraine’s unwavering support. “She’s been amazing… my mum has been such a support through all of this,” Rosie said. “We’re very lucky that my parents live six minutes down the road.”
Now, over a year later, Rosie is embracing the “lovely chaos” of motherhood with Billie, even though she admits, “I still don’t know anything.” She credits her family for helping her navigate the challenges of the toddler stage.
Lorraine, speaking about her granddaughter, Billie, shared her joy in the little moments. “Billie’s so gorgeous. She’s crawling, nearly walking, she’s talking rubbish and she’s wonderful. Her lovely little face lights up when she sees me – she’s my wee sunshine.”
Postpartum anxiety, as described by the charity Tommy’s, can manifest as constant worry, excessive stress about the baby, and a sense of dread that affects daily life. With proper support and understanding, Rosie has come a long way in managing her anxiety, and her story serves as an important reminder of the mental health struggles that many new parents face.
