In a surprising turn of events, ITV’s Lorraine show was without its regular host as Lorraine Kelly was replaced by Ben Shephard due to a sudden and serious health issue. The 66-year-old presenter found herself completely unable to speak after her throat condition worsened overnight, leading to a last-minute change in the show’s schedule.
Ben Shephard, best known for his role on Good Morning Britain, stepped in for Lorraine, who had been visibly struggling with her voice all week. During the broadcast, Kate Garraway couldn’t help but joke about the situation, saying: “Lorraine’s looking a bit rough this morning, if I’m honest. Ben Shephard, what are you doing?” To which Ben responded: “I’m not 100% sure, Kate, as you know. But I can tell you that unfortunately, Lorraine’s voice has been getting very bad.”
Lorraine’s vocal troubles had been noticed as early as Tuesday’s programme. Co-host Susanna Reid pointed out that Lorraine was beginning to lose her voice, urging her to ask Dr. Amir Khan for medical advice. Lorraine admitted on-air that her throat issues were far from ideal, but she soldiered on, though clearly struggling.
In response to her growing discomfort, Dr. Amir Khan appeared on air to examine Lorraine’s throat and glands, offering his expertise on the matter. Lorraine later shared that ginger tea helped soothe her throat, bringing some relief. “I’m feeling a lot better now,” she noted during the show. Despite this, her voice continued to deteriorate, and by Thursday, she was completely unable to speak, leading to Ben Shephard’s impromptu hosting role.
Ben addressed the viewers early in the show, assuring them that Lorraine was receiving all the necessary care. “It finally collapsed last night, and she couldn’t say a thing,” Ben shared, adding, “much to Steve’s [her husband’s] delight – just a few squeaks here and there.” He then sent his well wishes to Lorraine, saying, “Everyone here is sending their love, Lorraine, wishing you a speedy recovery.”
Fans on social media expressed both concern for Lorraine and appreciation for Ben’s guest hosting. “Omg how refreshing is it to see @benshephard on #Lorraine!” one fan tweeted. Another wrote, “It’s sad that poor Lorraine is too unwell for work today, but it’s lovely to have an extra half hour of Ben!”
