In a deeply emotional interview, Johnny Ball, the beloved TV personality and iconic children’s show host, has opened up about the toughest fight of his life: his battle with prostate cancer. The 87-year-old, who has been a staple in British television for decades, admits that the end is near, but he remains resolute in his determination to face it with a smile on his face.
Johnny, best known for hosting Play School and Think of a Number, revealed to The Mirror that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in August 2022. After undergoing rigorous radiation treatment, Johnny shared that he’s “doing fine” and continues to appreciate each day, despite the storm of challenges that have come his way.
“I’ve been kicked in the teeth in every possible way by life and by situations and by people,” Johnny says, his voice tinged with both sorrow and strength. “But I still cannot help but smile. I have my wife, my dog, my life. I’m very happy with my life, and I’m happy that I’m still fit at 87.”

His words carry the weight of a lifetime lived through hardship, but also a remarkable resilience that shines through even in the face of terminal illness. Johnny candidly admits, “By rights, I don’t have long left, but I want to spend it with a smile on my face.”
Despite the toll that his diagnosis has taken on him, Johnny remains determined to focus on the positives. For him, it’s the little things: his wife Dianne, their dog, and the life they’ve built together. He reflects on the emotional toll his cancer diagnosis has had on his family, especially his wife, Dianne. The two have spent years together, through both good times and bad, and now they find themselves once again contemplating the end of Johnny’s journey. But with the support of his doctors and a successful treatment regimen, Johnny feels fortunate to have been given more time.

Johnny’s path to recovery has not been an easy one. After starting daily radiation treatments in September 2022, he admits that the toll on his body was heavy, but the relief after each session was “wonderful.” Each day is a gift, and Johnny now treasures every moment with his loved ones. Thanks to the effective treatments, Johnny has been given more years to live—and he’s determined to make the most of them.
In addition to his cancer battle, Johnny has made his health a priority. He’s adopted a simple seven-minute workout routine, focused on staying active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. From stretching to lifting dumbbells, Johnny refuses to let age or illness define him. His healthy diet, including a morning cereal with prunes, is part of his plan to stay strong. And while he’s known for his disciplined routine, Johnny doesn’t shy away from life’s pleasures—he jokingly admits that he enjoys “two pints” of beer in the evening.
Johnny’s resilience is truly remarkable. At 87, he’s not only defied the odds of his health struggles but has also penned a new memoir, Stories That Must Be Told!, set to be released on March 28. His determination to keep sharing his stories is a testament to his belief in the power of storytelling, even in the most trying of times.

Johnny is a father of three and has been married to his second wife, Dianne, for over 50 years. Together, they have two sons and six grandchildren, including his daughter Zoe’s son, Woody, who is 24. The family’s bond has been a source of strength for Johnny, especially as they continue to navigate the pain of loss. Zoe’s mother, Julia, tragically passed away from pancreatic cancer in April 2024, a loss that added another layer of grief to Johnny’s already heavy heart.
But Johnny remains determined to move forward, embracing each day with the same smile that has endeared him to millions. His story is one of profound loss, but also incredible strength, a reminder that life—no matter how difficult—can still be lived with love, laughter, and resilience.
