Johnny Ball Opens Up About His Battle with Prostate Cancer: “I Don’t Have Long Left, But I Want to Spend It with a Smile”
Johnny Ball, the beloved TV personality and father of Zoe Ball, has shared an incredibly personal reflection on his battle with prostate cancer and his outlook on life at 87. Despite undergoing treatment for prostate cancer since his diagnosis in August 2022, Johnny remains remarkably upbeat, expressing gratitude for the time he has left.
In an interview with The Mirror, Johnny opened up about his health challenges: “I’ve been kicked in the teeth in every possible way by life and by situations and by people. But I still cannot help but smile. I have my wife, my dog, my life. I’m very happy with my life. I’m happy that I’m still fit at 87.”
He added, “By rights, I don’t have long left. I want to spend it with a smile on my face.”
Overcoming Health Struggles
Johnny’s journey with prostate cancer began in August 2022, when he was diagnosed and quickly started daily radiation treatment. Thankfully, after three months of treatment, Johnny triumphantly shared that he was through it and doing well. Despite the grueling battle, Johnny describes the experience as a “blessing” and feels fortunate to have been granted more years of life.
Johnny, known for his iconic roles in children’s TV shows Play School and Think Of A Number, continues to stay active with a simple daily workout routine and a healthy diet, saying it keeps him “incredibly fit.” He adds with humor that his evening ritual includes enjoying “two pints” of beer.
Family, Strength, and Legacy
In addition to his resilience, Johnny also expresses deep love and appreciation for his family. Married to his second wife, Dianne, for over 50 years, the couple shares two sons, Dan and Nick, and six grandchildren, including Zoe Ball’s son, Woody. The family recently celebrated Johnny and Dianne’s golden wedding anniversary.
Reflecting on his battle with cancer, Johnny reveals that despite some fears when first diagnosed, he has come to terms with his condition and is ready to live out his days with a positive attitude.
As Johnny prepares to release his second memoir, Stories That Must Be Told!, set for release on March 28, 2026, his spirit remains undeterred by his struggles. His story is one of resilience, strength, and a reminder to appreciate the time we have.
