Jesy Nelson, former Little Mix star, has bravely shared an emotional update on her twin daughters, Ocean and Story, who are undergoing treatment for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The 34-year-old singer posted poignant photos of her nine-month-old girls wearing leg splints as they cuddled in their hospital bed. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Jesy remains determined to fight for their future.
The Battle with SMA 💪

Ocean and Story were diagnosed with SMA, a genetic disorder that causes severe muscle weakness by affecting motor nerve cells in the spinal cord. In its most severe form, SMA Type 1, babies often have a life expectancy of less than two years without treatment. Jesy revealed the diagnosis in January, and despite the grim prognosis, she is hopeful and committed to ensuring her daughters have the best chance at life.
“My girls are the strongest, most resilient babies. I believe they will defy all the odds,” Jesy shared. She continues to support them through their treatments and has also been working tirelessly to raise awareness for SMA, hoping to make a difference for other families.
Newborn SMA Screening: A Glimmer of Hope ✨

Jesy’s latest post comes after a deeply emotional visit to a laboratory in Scotland where a newborn blood spot screening for SMA is being tested. This pilot program, which tests all babies born in Scotland, is set to be rolled out across the UK. In her Instagram post, Jesy expressed her gratitude for the life-saving progress, sharing, “Emotional day in Scotland visiting the newborn blood spot screening laboratory for SMA.”
She added, “If newborn screening had been in place when Ocean and Story were born, their lives could have been very different.”
Advocating for Change: A Mother’s Determination 🔊

Jesy has become a passionate advocate for SMA testing, starting a petition to add SMA screening to the NHS newborn screening program. With over 100,000 signatures, the petition is now set to be debated in Parliament. This milestone was a significant victory, and Jesy couldn’t hold back her tears as she thanked those who supported the cause. “I cannot actually put into words how grateful I am that this moment has just happened right here! And it’s all thanks to you guys,” she said emotionally.
Focused on Family 💕
Despite personal challenges, including the end of her relationship with fiancé Zion Foster, Jesy’s primary focus remains on her daughters’ health. “They are my whole heart and soul, and my main focus is getting them strong and advocating for the SMA test,” Jesy said. While her music career is currently on hold, her determination to fight for her daughters’ future continues to inspire many.
Jesy’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and she remains a beacon of hope for families affected by SMA. “Every action helps bring awareness and hope,” she encourages, urging her followers to continue supporting the fight for SMA screening.
