“I Feel Absolutely Rubbish Today”: Beverley Callard Breaks Down in Raw Post-Surgery Update as Breast Cancer Battle Takes Its Toll

For decades, Beverley Callard has been a picture of strength on British television — sharp-tongued, resilient, unshakeable.

But this week, the 68-year-old actress let the armour fall.

In a deeply raw social-media update, Beverley revealed she is sore, exhausted, emotional — and struggling just days after undergoing breast cancer surgery.

“I feel absolutely rubbish today,” she admitted — words that stopped fans in their tracks.

Speaking one week after her operation, Beverley described a morning that quietly captured the reality of recovery.

“I woke up and put on yesterday’s clothes — the ones I dropped on the floor last night,” she said.
“I haven’t cleaned my teeth. I haven’t brushed my hair.”

Her voice cracked as she confessed she couldn’t even answer the phone.

“If anyone says something kind to me, I just cry.”

The pain, she said, hasn’t lifted.

“I’m sore. I’m really tired. I feel queasy and I don’t know why.”

Diagnosed — Then Displaced

Earlier this month, Beverley revealed she had been diagnosed with breast cancer just after relocating to Dublin to begin a new role on Irish soap Fair City.

The diagnosis came at a moment of major life change — forcing her to pause work and refocus on survival.

Despite reassuring fans that the cancer was caught early, the physical and emotional toll has been undeniable.

A Stranger’s Kindness — And Tears

In Friday’s emotional post, Beverley shared a gift that broke through her defences.

A heart-shaped cushion arrived in the post — sent by a stranger — designed to ease pain under her arm following surgery.

“I didn’t want to post yesterday because I didn’t want to make anyone miserable,” she said, choking back tears.

She added she plans to re-gift the cushion once she no longer needs it — passing comfort forward.

Beverley also revealed the moment that hit her hardest.

When her dressings were removed for the first time, she insisted on facing it alone — even asking her husband of 15 years, Jon McEwan, not to come in.

“He said, ‘Please don’t shut me out,’” she recalled.

Sitting in the breast clinic waiting room, surrounded by women of all ages, Beverley found strength — briefly.

“We are so brave,” she thought. “Cancer touches everybody.”

But when she finally saw herself?

“I just thought, ‘I can’t do this.’”

She refused to look in the mirror.
Walked out.
Got into the car.

“And I cried my heart out like a baby,” she said. “I’d lost the whole lot.”

The Complication Still Ahead

Doctors later discovered a large haematoma under her arm — a collection of clotted blood that may require further surgery next week.

For now, consultants are monitoring it closely, hoping to avoid another operation if possible.

Beverley previously confirmed two lymph nodes were removed as a precaution to ensure the cancer had not spread.

A Message for Others Walking the Same Path

Despite everything, Beverley ended her update with compassion for others.

“If anyone else is going through this part now — God love you,” she said softly.
“You can do this.”

This wasn’t just a health update.

It was a moment of unfiltered truth — about pain, vulnerability, and the quiet bravery that comes after the surgery, when the cameras are off and strength is harder to summon.

Beverley Callard has played formidable women on screen for years — most famously in Coronation Street.

This week, she reminded everyone that real courage doesn’t always look strong.

Sometimes, it looks like telling the truth on the hardest day.
