Comedian Harry Enfield has revealed that his love of cold water swimming has left him partially deaf.
The Harry Enfield & Chums star, 65, said he discovered the problem after visiting a doctor to be fitted for hearing aids.
Doctors told him he had developed exostosis, commonly known as “surfer’s ear” — a condition where bony growths form inside the ear canal after repeated exposure to cold water.
Harry believes the issue was caused by his regular swims at Highgate Ponds in north London.
Speaking on the Off Menu podcast, he joked that he had “stalactites” growing in his ears.
The actor said the growths can be removed through surgery, but admitted the procedure sounded painful — adding that he would rather put up with reduced hearing for now.
Cold water swimming has become increasingly popular among celebrities, with stars including Princess Kate, Fearne Cotton, Harry Styles and Lady Gaga all said to be fans of cold plunges or outdoor swimming.
Supporters claim the practice can help with stress, mood and mental clarity, but health experts warn it can also carry risks, especially when done without proper preparation.
For Harry, the wellness trend has come with an unexpected price — and a reminder that even healthy habits can have hidden downsides.
