Ed Sheeran Opens Up About Wife Cherry’s Cancer Battle and ‘Worst Week’ of His Life
In an emotional new interview, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has candidly shared details about his wife Cherry Seaborn’s battle with cancer and the devastating challenges he faced in the past few years.
The 35-year-old Grammy-winning artist opened up during his appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, hosted by Benny Blanco, Lil Dicky, and Kristin Batalucco. Ed revealed that February 2022 was one of the most difficult periods of his life, sharing the trauma of learning that Cherry had been diagnosed with cancer.
He recalled, “The day Cherry rang me up and said that she had cancer, that was probably one of the worst days… That was probably the worst week because Jamal [Edwards] died that week as well, and then we went straight into the court case. And then Shane [Warne] died – the first day of court.”
Ed’s grief deepened as he navigated the loss of his dear friend Jamal Edwards, who tragically passed away at just 31 years old from a heart attack. The timing was even more agonizing as he was also embroiled in a high-profile court case accusing him of plagiarizing his hit song Shape of You, a case he eventually won.
On Cherry’s health, Ed shared, “She’s fine, I mean she had the operation. She was pregnant at the time, so that’s why it was difficult.” Cherry underwent surgery to remove the tumour after giving birth to their second child, Jupiter. Ed added, “Thankfully, touch wood, totally fine,” expressing his immense relief.
Reflecting on the tumultuous period, Ed admitted, “It was f**king scary.” Yet, the couple’s resilience has been unwavering, and Ed is grateful for the support of his wife as they face life’s most difficult challenges together.
Ed and Cherry, who met in school at the age of 11, later married in December 2018. Their daughters, Lyra and Jupiter, were born in 2020 and 2022. Ed’s upcoming album Subtract is deeply influenced by the life-changing events the couple endured, with Ed revealing how it altered the course of his music.
