In an exclusive tell-all interview, Carol McGiffin, the outspoken Loose Women star, has opened up about her regretful first marriage to controversial radio DJ Chris Evans. The 66-year-old TV personality, who was married to Evans from 1991 to 1998, admits she “didn’t really know” why they got married, revealing that for a significant part of their relationship, she didn’t even like him.
McGiffin, who has never been shy about speaking her mind, confessed that she was “swept along” into the marriage and that it was “a big mistake.” Despite her suspicions of Evans’ infidelities, Carol explains that she didn’t confront him, as by then, she had already mentally checked out of the relationship.
In a candid interview on the Suddenly Single podcast, McGiffin shared the painful truth about her feelings during their marriage: “I didn’t want to be married to him anymore… I didn’t care what he was getting up to when I wasn’t around.” Reflecting on those years, she says, “I didn’t like him for a lot of the time, and I wasn’t even sure why I married him in the first place.”
Carol McGiffin’s marriage to Evans has long been a subject of public interest. Over the years, she has repeatedly spoken out about the toxic aspects of their relationship, particularly Evans’ manipulative behavior. “He was nothing without me,” McGiffin claimed. “Anyone who thinks I married him for his money is wrong because I had more money than him at the time. I was the one holding it all together.”
Evans, known for his infamous radio career and larger-than-life personality, has always been a lightning rod for criticism, and McGiffin didn’t hold back in expressing her bitterness over their failed union. She even compared their relationship to an addiction, saying, “Chris was like a Class A drug, and I was addicted.”
The couple’s constant arguments only added fuel to the fire, with McGiffin recalling one particularly petty confrontation that encapsulated the dysfunction in their relationship. “We argued about a can of deodorant,” she recalled. “It sounds ridiculous, but it was indicative of our entire marriage. He threw the can across the room, smashing cassette cases, and then the next day, he flushed the toothpaste down the toilet. It was pathetic.”
Their separation came after two years of marriage, but it wasn’t until 1998 that their divorce was finalized. Despite their rocky relationship, McGiffin has since maintained a relatively positive attitude about their past. “I don’t regret it,” she said in a 2010 interview, although she admitted it had a profound impact on her mental health during that time.
Evans, who went on to have high-profile relationships with Billie Piper and Natasha Shishmanian, has continued to maintain a public persona. McGiffin, on the other hand, found happiness later in life, marrying her second husband, Mark Cassidy, in 2018 in a private ceremony in Thailand. But she has been open about how her first marriage to Evans profoundly affected her ability to trust and love fully.
In recent years, McGiffin has made peace with her past, acknowledging that her first marriage taught her valuable lessons. “People get past being cheated on,” she said, emphasizing her ability to forgive and move on. And although she admits her marriage to Evans was a huge mistake, it was ultimately an experience that shaped her into the woman she is today.
Evans, who went on to marry and have children with his second wife Natasha Shishmanian, has not publicly commented on McGiffin’s remarks. However, his tumultuous love life has been well-documented, and he has certainly moved on from his relationship with McGiffin.
Despite the pain of her past, Carol McGiffin continues to thrive in her career and personal life. Her frank admission about her troubled first marriage serves as a powerful reminder of the strength it takes to move on from a toxic relationship and find happiness once again.
