Carol McGiffin Opens Up About Regretting Marriage to Chris Evans: ‘I Didn’t Like Him for Much of the Time’
Carol McGiffin has openly admitted that she regrets marrying her first husband, Chris Evans, revealing that for much of their relationship, she didn’t like him. The 66-year-old Loose Women star, who was married to the DJ from 1991 to 1998, confessed in a candid interview that she “doesn’t really know” why they tied the knot.
Reflecting on her past marriage, Carol shared that she felt “swept along” by the relationship and was convinced at the time that she couldn’t live without him. However, she now views their decision to marry as a “big mistake.”
Carol has previously accused Chris of being “manipulative” and suggested he was “nothing without her.” She also hinted at suspicions of infidelity, admitting that although she didn’t confront him about it, she already knew she no longer wanted to be married to him.
Speaking on the Suddenly Single podcast, Carol said: “In the end, it was my first marriage, and I didn’t want to be married to him anymore. I don’t even know why we got married. It was a big mistake, and I didn’t like him for much of the time.”
Carol also recalled a specific argument with Chris that symbolized the dysfunction of their marriage. She said: “We argued all the time. Our rows were pathetic. We had one about a can of deodorant. He seemed to think he was a hero for buying it, and when I suggested he might want to buy toothpaste, he threw the can across the room.”
Her divorce from Chris was finalized in 1998, two years after their separation. Since then, Carol has openly discussed her troubled marriage, describing herself as a “crazy, dependent, idiotic human being” during her time with Chris, whom she described as “like a Class A drug” to which she was addicted.
While Carol doesn’t regret the relationship in its entirety, she has frequently described her marriage to Chris as a dark chapter in her life. Speaking to the Daily Mail in 2010, she admitted to becoming someone unrecognizable during their time together.
Chris, for his part, went on to marry actress Billie Piper in a whirlwind romance that shocked many due to their 16-year age gap. They divorced in 2004 but remained good friends. Chris later married golfer Natasha Shishmanian in 2007, and the couple has four children together.
Carol has since found happiness with her second husband, Mark Cassidy, whom she married in 2018, although she kept the news private for a year.
