Concern is growing for Bonnie Tyler after a close friend in Portugal shared a worrying update on the singer’s condition following a serious medical emergency.
The legendary Welsh singer was admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, after reportedly undergoing life-saving surgery for a burst appendix. While initial updates suggested she was recovering well, her condition is said to have deteriorated, leading doctors to place her in an induced coma to support her recovery.
According to reports, doctors later attempted to bring Bonnie out of the coma at an Algarve hospital when she suffered a cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated.
Liberto Mealha, a long-time friend of the star, appeared on Good Morning Britain and said those close to Bonnie were praying for better news.
He explained that he had not been able to see her because she remains in intensive care, but said doctors were staying positive despite the seriousness of the situation.
“We are praying for better news,” he said. “The doctors are positive with the situation, but so far it’s not that good.”
Bonnie’s official team previously confirmed that the singer had been placed in an induced coma by doctors to help her recover.
In a statement, her spokesperson said: “Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery. We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please. We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”
The update came after an earlier statement revealed that Bonnie had been admitted to hospital for emergency intestinal surgery. At the time, her team said the operation had gone well and that she was recuperating.
The statement read: “We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating.”
However, hopes for a swift recovery were shaken after reports emerged that her health had taken another difficult turn.
Bonnie, best known for her powerful voice and timeless hits, divides her time between South Wales and Faro after falling in love with Portugal. Over the years, she has often spoken openly about the importance of health, fitness and staying strong enough to keep performing.
In a previous interview, she said that being able to continue singing on stage with her band meant everything to her.
“I’m still rocking on that stage with my wonderful band, and if you’ve got your health, you’ve got everything,” she said.
The singer also revealed that she maintained her fitness with short daily Pilates sessions and had undergone procedures on her knees, which she said had been successful.
