Arlo Parks, the Mercury Prize-winning artist, has unveiled her highly anticipated third album, Ambiguous Desire, marking a bold new direction in her musical journey. Drawing inspiration from her experiences in the nightlife scene, Parks takes listeners on a journey through freedom, spontaneity, and self-reflection, as she moves away from her previous songwriting style.
The 25-year-old Londoner, known for her emotionally rich sound, described the album as a “starting point” for her new chapter. “I wanted this to be made from the exact feelings I’m experiencing right now, where I’m really living in the moment,” she explained.
Parks, who rose to fame with her debut Collapsed In Sunbeams, aimed to explore new creative horizons by immersing herself in the nightlife culture she once missed during her rise to stardom. Ambiguous Desire was shaped by late-night escapades, intimate moments with friends, and the vibrant energy of the clubs she frequented.
The album’s authenticity is underpinned by raw, unfiltered storytelling, with Parks emphasizing the importance of expressing herself exactly as she feels. “I used to focus on making things as beautiful and poetic as possible, but this time, I stripped it all down to the barest truth, and it felt more real,” she shared.
The tracks on Ambiguous Desire explore themes of personal growth, relationships, and the electric feeling of club culture, incorporating elements of house and garage music, genres that have always resonated with Parks. “It’s about embracing who I am and showcasing the energy of those nights,” she said.
The album’s standout tracks, like Jetta and 2Sided, capture the essence of spontaneous nights out and the complexities of human connection. “I felt it was the perfect way to kick off this new era,” she recalled about the creation of 2Sided, which came together effortlessly.
