Flora Turnbull Honors Late Father Bill with London Marathon Run to Raise Funds for Prostate Cancer UK
Flora Turnbull, 33, will pay tribute to her late father, BBC Breakfast presenter Bill Turnbull, by running the 2026 London Marathon on April 27—exactly the same day Bill passed away in 2022 after his battle with prostate cancer. Flora’s emotional journey will help raise funds for Prostate Cancer UK, continuing Bill’s legacy of awareness and support for prostate cancer research.
Flora had initially signed up for the marathon two years ago but had to defer when she became pregnant. Now, with her 17-month-old son, Felix, in tow, she’s ready to join 280 other runners in a shared goal to raise funds for vital research into prostate cancer, the most common cancer among men. Flora is aiming to help reach the ambitious fundraising target of £720,000, which will contribute to the £42 million TRANSFORM trial—a groundbreaking initiative designed to revolutionize prostate cancer screening and ultimately establish a national screening program.
Bill, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, became a passionate advocate for Prostate Cancer UK, raising awareness and inspiring thousands of men to get tested. His efforts sparked the “Fry-Turnbull Effect,” which significantly increased the number of men seeking tests and ultimately saved countless lives.
Flora shared her thoughts on continuing her father’s work: “Since Dad’s diagnosis, he worked tirelessly to raise awareness about prostate cancer. After his passing, our family was overwhelmed by the gratitude from men who were inspired to get tested because of Dad’s story. Now, I want to continue his legacy—by running the marathon, I’m helping ensure that we can keep our fathers, brothers, sons, and loved ones with us for as long as possible.”
Bill’s dedication to Prostate Cancer UK was unwavering, from hosting charity campaigns and TV interviews to raising significant funds. Even during the lockdown, he hosted a Father’s Day quiz that raised over £10,000 for the charity. A passionate Wycombe Wanderers FC supporter, Bill also worked with the club to raise awareness for prostate cancer within the football community, and his memory was honored in 2023 when the club raised £390,000 with a fundraising walk from Wembley to Wycombe.
Flora’s marathon run reflects Bill’s lasting impact on the charity, which continues to push for early detection and innovative screening methods. Chris Jarrett, Fundraising Director at Prostate Cancer UK, praised Flora’s participation: “Bill’s efforts helped thousands of men seek help, and Flora is carrying on his incredible legacy. We are so grateful for her involvement in this year’s marathon.”
Flora’s courageous step into the marathon serves as an inspiring tribute to Bill and a reminder of the ongoing fight against prostate cancer. Prostate Cancer UK urges men to be aware of the risks, especially if they are over 50, Black, or have a family history of the disease.
With Flora leading the way, Bill’s legacy continues to inspire those fighting prostate cancer, ensuring that his impact is never forgotten.
