Dame Esther Rantzen’s Daughter Shares Heartbreaking Update on Her Mother’s Health: “The Treatments Have Stopped Working”

Dame Esther Rantzen’s daughter, Rebecca Wilcox, has shared a devastating update on her mother’s health, revealing that the television personality is now in the palliative stage of her battle with terminal cancer.

In 2023, Dame Esther bravely disclosed that she had been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, yet she continued to show resilience, advocating for the assisted dying bill even amid her personal fight. However, on February 27, during an appearance on Good Morning Britain, Rebecca provided an emotional update that has left viewers heartbroken.Dame Esther Rantzen on Lorraine in 2024

Speaking candidly with presenter Kate Garraway, Rebecca opened up about the family’s approach to Dame Esther’s condition. “As a family, we’re great,” she said with a touch of humor. “We live in denial about everything. I mean, who has cancer? No one has cancer.” But despite the levity, she acknowledged the harsh reality: “Obviously, it’s a really weird time. Anyone who has someone they adore with a terminal diagnosis knows—you just live in a state of anxiety between the scans.”

Rebecca went on to explain that her mother is now in the palliative phase, with the treatments no longer having any effect. She choked back tears as she said, “Mum is incredible. I don’t know how she’s doing it. She is surviving not only the cancer but the treatments as well. The treatments have stopped working, and she is still going.”

The conversation then turned to the assisted dying bill, with Rebecca revealing her mother’s frustration that the legislation might expire before it can pass. Co-presenter Ranvir Singh asked whether Dame Esther would consider traveling abroad if she reached a “terrible crossroads,” as she had previously expressed the desire to go to Dignitas in Switzerland. Rebecca confirmed, “Absolutely. We are in a privileged position, if that’s the word. She can afford the death she wants and deserves. She will pay £15,000 to go to Dignitas. She will go before she has to—months before she would die here—and she will have to go alone.”Dame Esther's daughter Rebecca on GMB talking about mum

The update is particularly poignant as Dame Esther has largely stayed out of the public eye in recent years, choosing to focus on her personal health battle. She celebrated an early Christmas with her family last year, fearing she wouldn’t make it to the actual holiday.

Last year, Dame Esther revealed that she had stopped her cancer treatments, citing the overwhelming side effects that outweighed any potential benefits. “Right now, I am not receiving any treatment, which was my doctor’s decision. The side effects outweigh the benefits. The cancers are progressing, but according to my most recent scan, very slowly,” she shared.

This latest revelation by Rebecca paints a deeply emotional picture of the Rantzen family’s ongoing journey, highlighting Dame Esther’s unyielding strength and determination in the face of unimaginable challenges.
