However, the announcement on Saturday that the project was no longer moving forward has left fans and the creative team, including Sarah and director Chloe Zhao, blindsided.
Originally airing between 1997 and 2003, the iconic show set in the fictional Californian town of Sunnydale, followed the adventures of Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), a teenager who fought evil spirits by night while attending high school by day. Despite its enormous cultural impact and massive fan following, the Buffyverse has been marred by a series of unfortunate events that have plagued the show’s legacy.
The cancellation of the reboot is just the latest chapter in the saga of Buffy, with the original cast facing personal struggles that have overshadowed the show’s legacy. Male characters like Xander were often depicted as “nice guys” but engaged in problematic behavior, which has since been criticized for its anti-feminist undertones. James Marsters, who played Spike, described filming the scene as a “personal hell” and sought therapy following the experience.
