Bonnie Tyler wakes from induced coma as team shares cautious update on serious condition

Bonnie Tyler, 75, has woken up from coma in Portuguese hospital after 'suffering cardiac arrest' but she remains 'seriously ill'Bonnie Tyler has reportedly regained consciousness after being placed in a medically induced coma during a frightening health crisis in Portugal.

The 75-year-old Welsh music legend remains seriously ill in intensive care at a hospital in Faro, but doctors are said to remain hopeful that she will eventually make a full recovery.

Bonnie’s team confirmed that the Total Eclipse of the Heart singer was no longer in a coma following weeks of concern from fans around the world.

A representative told The Sun: “Bonnie is no longer in a coma, but remains seriously ill.”

They added: “Although her condition is improving, the recovery process is slow.”

The update offers the first major sign of progress since Bonnie was hospitalised after becoming unwell at her home in Portugal’s Algarve region.

However, her condition remains serious and she is continuing to receive specialist care in the intensive care unit.

Reports have suggested the singer suffered a cardiac arrest during her treatment, although her representatives have not publicly confirmed that she required resuscitation.

Bonnie was reportedly placed into a medically induced coma by doctors to support her recovery following emergency intestinal surgery.

Her team previously explained: “Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery.

“We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time please.

“We will issue a further statement when we are able to.”

The singer, who has had multiple hits in her long career and competed at the Eurovision Song Contest representing the UK in 2013, is believed to have been rushed to hospital on April 30 (pictured in 1986)The singer is believed to have first fallen ill in April after experiencing persistent pain for several weeks.

According to reports, she spent two days confined to bed at her Algarve property before her concerned husband, Robert Sullivan, took her to a private medical facility.

She was later transferred to Faro Hospital, where doctors carried out emergency surgery.

Bonnie is believed to have been admitted on April 30 after being treated for a perforated intestine and requiring urgent bowel surgery.

Her representatives initially said that the operation had been successful and that she was beginning to recuperate.

“The surgery went well and she is now recuperating.

“We know that all of her family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.”

Bonnie was initially described as stable in an intermediate care unit.

Reports later claimed that she experienced a cardiac arrest when doctors attempted to bring her out of the precautionary coma.

A cardiac arrest occurs when the heart suddenly stops pumping blood effectively around the body, causing a person to collapse and lose consciousness.

It is a life-threatening medical emergency that requires immediate intervention, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and, where available, the use of a defibrillator.

Bonnie’s representatives have not confirmed the precise circumstances surrounding the alleged incident.

Her team has also urged the media and public not to circulate unverified stories about her health.

In a statement released in May, Bonnie’s management confirmed she remained seriously ill but stable.

They said: “As of this morning, Bonnie remains seriously ill but stable in hospital in Faro. However, her doctors are still positive that she will make a full recovery.”

The statement also addressed claims attributed to Liberto Mealha, who has been described in reports as a longstanding friend of the singer.

Bonnie’s family made clear that Mealha was not acting as their official representative or receiving authorised medical updates on their behalf.

They said: “Bonnie’s family are very disappointed at the many lurid and untrue rumours now circulating in the media and would like to make it clear that ‘Liberto Mealha’ does not represent them in any way whatsoever and is not in contact with them regarding Bonnie.”

The family added: “When there is any further news of Bonnie’s condition then we will issue another statement.

“We ask that the media cease to speculate or publish wild rumours, which simply serve to upset her family, friends and many fans, and ask again for privacy and decency at this difficult time.”

Mealha separately told The Mirror that friends of the singer were praying for positive news.

He said he had been unable to visit Bonnie because she was receiving treatment in intensive care.

“I could not see her because she’s in intensive care, but we are praying for better news,” he said.

“The doctors are positive with the situation, but so far it’s not that good.”

Mealha reportedly first met the singer after opening a nightclub in Albufeira during the 1980s near her Portuguese holiday home.

His daughter is also said to be Bonnie’s goddaughter.

He claimed Bonnie’s husband had remained devotedly at her bedside throughout the medical emergency, leaving the hospital only to sleep at their home during the night.

According to Mealha, Robert has been deeply grateful to the doctors and nurses caring for his wife at Faro Hospital.

He also claimed Robert believed the Portuguese medical team had played a critical role in keeping the singer alive.

The couple have been married since 1973 and have spent more than five decades supporting one another through Bonnie’s extraordinary international career.

The star was reportedly still maintaining her professional commitments before being admitted to hospital, despite experiencing continuing pain.

Bonnie has enjoyed one of the most recognisable voices in popular music, with a career stretching across more than five decades.

Born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, South Wales, she rose to fame during the 1970s before becoming a global star with her distinctive husky vocals.

Her biggest hits include It’s a Heartache, Holding Out for a Hero and Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Total Eclipse of the Heart, released in 1983, became an international number one and remains one of the era’s most famous power ballads.

The singer has continued performing around the world and releasing music long after first finding fame.

She also represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013 with the track Believe in Me.

Her hospitalisation has prompted an outpouring of concern from fans who have followed her music for generations.

Messages of support have been shared online as admirers wait for official updates from her family and management.

The confirmation that Bonnie has regained consciousness will provide some relief after weeks of uncertainty.

However, her representatives have stressed that her recovery remains slow and that she is still seriously ill.

Being awake does not mean the danger has completely passed, and she remains under close observation while doctors continue to assess her progress.

The medical team is nevertheless reported to be optimistic about her long-term outlook.

For now, Bonnie’s family is concentrating on her recovery and has asked for privacy while she continues receiving intensive treatment.

The singer’s condition has already generated considerable speculation, but those closest to her have repeatedly urged the public to rely only on authorised statements.

Her latest health update represents a hopeful step forward following an extremely difficult period.

After emergency surgery, an induced coma and reports of a possible cardiac arrest, Bonnie has now woken up and is showing signs of improvement.

But the woman behind one of music’s most powerful voices still faces a slow and serious recovery — with her husband, relatives, friends and millions of fans hoping she continues to grow stronger.
