Lauren Silverman reveals pain of discovering she was pregnant with Simon Cowell’s son

'It was just awful': Lauren Silverman detailed finding out she was pregnant with son Eric following an affair with her husband's friend Simon Cowell 12 years agoLauren Silverman has opened up about the devastating emotional turmoil she experienced after discovering she was pregnant with Simon Cowell’s son while her marriage was collapsing.

The 48-year-old, who now uses the name Lauren Cowell, described the period as one of the hardest moments of her life as she reflected on the intense public scrutiny that surrounded the pregnancy.

Lauren welcomed son Eric with music mogul Simon in 2014 after their relationship became the subject of worldwide attention.

Lauren and Simon's affair was rumoured to have started when he was on holiday with her and her husband of ten years, Andrew Silverman, 49, in BarbadosAt the time, she was married to property developer Andrew Silverman, who had been a friend of Simon’s.

Speaking candidly on Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum podcast, Lauren said discovering she was expecting Eric brought a complicated mixture of feelings.

Podcast host Giovanna asked: “So what was it like finding out you were pregnant with Eric?”

Lauren said: 'It was one of the hardest times of my life and it was just, the way that people would look at me and you know, I was on the cover of every magazine and there were news stories about it because... Simon being Simon... and it was just awful'Lauren replied: “There are so many emotions that went with that because it was like, the end of my marriage.”

She continued: “It was one of the hardest times of my life and it was just, the way that people would look at me.

“I was on the cover of every magazine and there were news stories about it because… Simon being Simon… and it was just awful.”

The relationship between Lauren and Simon was reported to have begun while they were holidaying in Barbados with Andrew.

Lauren had been married to Andrew for ten years and was already a mother to their son Adam, who is now 20.

After news of the pregnancy emerged, Andrew filed for divorce and cited adultery as the reason for their separation.

In 2013, Simon said in an interview: 'I let down a friend and I feel bad about that. But the good thing is I¿m having a baby and never thought I would'Lauren and Simon went on to form a long-term relationship and became engaged in December 2021.

However, Lauren said the extraordinary level of press attention surrounding the beginning of their romance left her feeling judged by people who did not know her.

Her pregnancy should have been a private and emotional time, but it instead became an international showbusiness story because of Simon’s fame.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge was already one of television’s most recognisable personalities, known on both sides of the Atlantic for his work on The X Factor and America’s Got Talent.

Lauren said that suddenly becoming the subject of magazine covers and relentless news reports was “awful”.

Simon, 66, often says that his son, Eric, 12, completely changed his life and saved him from being an overworked workaholicFor years, she largely avoided speaking publicly about the events.

She explained that she made a deliberate decision to protect her children from further attention while they were growing up.

“For 12 years I’ve been… like you said, people probably haven’t even heard me speak in public,” she told Giovanna.

“I was very intentional about keeping myself private, but also, for my children and wanting them to be really protected in all of this.”

Lauren’s decision to speak now marks a significant change after more than a decade of remaining largely silent.

Her reflections also come after a major personal transformation in which she stopped drinking alcohol.

Lauren said giving up alcohol helped her confront emotions she had previously struggled to process.

She described the experience as a breakthrough that allowed her to look inward and accept her feelings without shame.

“That was really the pivotal moment for me when I stopped drinking that I was able to really look within and say, ‘OK, this is how I feel and it’s OK to feel whatever those things are,’” she explained.

“With that comes a real sense of freedom and independence.”

Lauren said the change felt as though a fog had finally lifted.

“I can’t explain it,” she added. “It’s like having a breakthrough, a fog lifted and that was such a huge moment for me.”

Simon also spoke publicly about the circumstances surrounding the pregnancy in 2013.

At the time, he acknowledged that his actions had hurt a friend.

“I let down a friend and I feel bad about that,” he said.

“But the good thing is I’m having a baby and never thought I would.”

Andrew later described the collapse of his marriage as a deeply difficult period.

Speaking in 2014, the real-estate entrepreneur said the experience had been “unexpected and shocking”.

He also explained that he had never wanted to become part of a tabloid story.

“I am a regular person, not a tabloid thing,” he said.

“It was a fascinating experience, unexpected and shocking.

“Being in the public spotlight is not something I envy. It’s never been my way.”

Andrew said the ordeal taught him important lessons about himself and the value of family.

“My focus has been on my son throughout the whole ordeal,” he added.

In 2015, Lauren publicly congratulated Andrew after he became engaged to Samantha Zimmerman, suggesting that the former couple had begun moving forward with their separate lives.

For Simon, the arrival of Eric proved life-changing.

The television producer, now 66, has frequently spoken about how becoming a father transformed his priorities.

Before Eric’s birth, Simon was known for a relentless working schedule and often admitted that his career dominated nearly every part of his life.

Fatherhood gave him a new sense of balance and helped him step away from his workaholic habits.

Lauren became emotional during the podcast as she remembered Simon’s reaction when their son was born.

“Simon was so emotional,” she recalled.

“I just remember thinking in that moment, ‘God, your life is about to change and you have no idea what’s about to happen to you.’”

Lauren explained that Simon had previously been someone who liked to keep every part of his life under control.

“There’s no way he could have known because he was someone who basically had everything under control and he kind of had his ways about him,” she said.

“And I think, you know, becoming a father completely changed his life.”

Eric, now 12, has occasionally appeared alongside his famous father at public events and has become a central part of Simon’s life.

Simon has said that his only child gave him a reason to slow down and reconsider what truly mattered.

Lauren and Simon have also taken a firm approach to protecting Eric from the potential dangers of the internet.

The couple have banned him from using social media and have called for stronger measures to protect children online.

Lauren has become increasingly vocal about the need for urgent action, arguing that parents should not be left to manage the risks alone.

Her comments came as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced proposed reforms aimed at increasing online protections for children.

The measures were described as an “Australia plus” package and included plans to raise the minimum age for major social-media platforms to 16.

Sites expected to be affected included TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and Snapchat.

The proposals were also said to go beyond Australia’s rules by extending protections to gaming and live-streaming services, with the aim of preventing strangers from contacting children.

For Lauren, keeping her family safe has been a priority since the moment her relationship with Simon became public.

She spent more than a decade refusing to turn her personal life into a public performance, even as she remained beside one of the world’s most famous entertainment figures.

Her podcast appearance offered a rare insight into the emotional cost of that period.

While her relationship with Simon ultimately led to the birth of their beloved son and a partnership that has endured for more than a decade, Lauren made clear that its beginning was accompanied by pain, judgment and the collapse of her marriage.

She has now reached a place where she feels able to examine those memories more honestly.

Stopping drinking, she said, gave her the clarity to accept even the most difficult feelings rather than hiding from them.

Her story was not simply one of discovering she was pregnant.

It was also the story of a marriage ending, a private woman being thrust into the international spotlight and a family attempting to rebuild under extraordinary pressure.

Twelve years later, Lauren appears ready to reclaim that story in her own words.

She remains protective of her children, devoted to Simon and grateful for the son who dramatically changed both of their lives.

But she is no longer pretending the journey was easy.

Behind the glamorous photographs and celebrity headlines was a woman confronting fear, guilt, heartbreak and relentless public judgment.

Now, after years of silence, Lauren has finally acknowledged just how painful that chapter truly was — while revealing the personal breakthrough that eventually helped her find freedom.
