Tate Ferdinand Opens Up About Early Jealousy With Stepmother Kate Ferdinand
In a candid moment on the Blended podcast, Tate Ferdinand, son of former footballer Rio Ferdinand, has opened up about his initial feelings of jealousy when his father began dating Kate Ferdinand.

The 18-year-old revealed to his stepmother that, in the early days of their relationship, he felt as though she was “stealing my dad from me.” The heart-to-heart was shared during a special podcast episode recorded at the family’s Portuguese estate, where Tate had recently celebrated a milestone 18th birthday.

Kate, 35, who co-hosts Blended alongside Priscilla Kessie and Nathalie Holmes-Lewis, joined via video link from Dubai, where she currently resides. Tate and Rio, 47, participated in the discussion in person, reflecting on the early challenges of blending their family.

Rio and Kate began dating in 2017, a few months after Kate’s split from TOWIE co-star Dan Edgar. Over time, Kate developed a close bond with Tate and his siblings, Lorenz and Tia, children from Rio’s marriage to the late Rebecca Ellison, who passed away from breast cancer in 2015.

During the podcast, Tate spoke openly about how his perception changed over time. “At first, I thought she was taking my dad away,” he admitted. “But now, I love her, and I feel like she’s part of the family.” Kate reflected on the moment Tate first referred to her as his stepmother, saying, “I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, I’m not an outsider anymore.’”
The couple married on the sun-drenched shores of Marmaris, Turkey, in September 2019, four years after Kate joined the family. Since then, Kate has become a pivotal figure in the children’s lives, helping raise Rio and Rebecca’s children alongside their own two daughters, Cree and Shae.

Kate has spoken previously about the complexities of blending a family following loss, acknowledging the emotional challenges of joining a household still grieving. She has also documented her experiences in her book, How to Build a Family, sharing insights on navigating step-parenthood with empathy and understanding.
Tate’s honesty and the family’s openness on the podcast offer a rare glimpse into the intimate dynamics of a modern blended family, showing how love, patience, and communication can transform initial tensions into lasting bonds.
