Michael Pennington, Star Wars Legend and Shakespearean Actor, Dies at 82
The legendary Michael Pennington, known for his iconic role as Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, has passed away at the age of 82.
Pennington, a veteran stage and screen actor, was revered not only for his role in the Star Wars saga but also for his deep contributions to the theatre, especially with Shakespeare’s works. He played Laertes in Hamlet alongside Anthony Hopkins and portrayed Michael Foot in The Iron Lady with Meryl Streep. Throughout his career, he appeared in notable TV series like The Bill, The Tudors, and Father Brown, and also in The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

His passing was confirmed by his close friend and colleague, Miriam Margolyes, who paid tribute on social media: “Michael Pennington, an old friend from Cambridge, was an outstanding actor, talented, intelligent, and sharp. I am deeply saddened.” Margolyes continued, “Rest in peace, my dear friend.”

Pennington spent his later years at Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors. He co-founded the English Shakespeare Company in 1986 and served as its artistic co-director until 1992, solidifying his legacy as a true Shakespearean artist.

Pennington’s death comes just a year after the passing of his longtime partner, writer Prue Skene. Fans and fellow actors have quickly shared their condolences, remembering him as a legend and a beloved figure in the industry.
