Legendary British Rocker Alex Ligertwood, Santana’s Iconic Lead Vocalist, Passes Away at 79
The beloved British rock legend, Alex Ligertwood, whose powerful vocals shaped the sound of Santana, has sadly passed away at the age of 79. His daughter, Merci, confirmed the heartbreaking news on Saturday, sharing that Alex died peacefully at his longtime Santa Monica home, with his loyal dog, Bobo, by his side. This comes just weeks after he performed on stage for the final time.
Alex’s wife, Shawn Brogan, expressed her grief on Facebook, writing, “Alex was loved by so many. If you knew him, you loved him. He touched so many with his extraordinary voice. He was all heart and soul.” Brogan reflected on his final performance, expressing gratitude that Alex had gone out on his terms, saying, “I’m grateful for that. He did it his way, on his terms, till the end.”
She ended her message with a poignant declaration of love: “I will always love you, my sweet Alex,” and asked fans to keep her and their children in their prayers.
The tributes have poured in for Ligertwood, with many praising his legendary vocal talent. Guitarist Brandon Paul, who toured with Alex as part of the “Icons of Classic Rock” tour, remembered him as “a world-class professional” with a voice “that was a force of nature.” Paul added, “Beyond the music, he was an amazing human being and a dear friend.”
Alex Ligertwood’s remarkable career spanned decades, most notably as Santana’s lead vocalist on five separate occasions between 1979 and 1994. His unmistakable voice brought life to iconic tracks such as “Winning,” “Hold On,” and “All I Ever Wanted.” His work on classic Santana albums like Marathon, Zebop!, and Shango remains a defining part of the band’s legacy.
In the years leading up to his death, Ligertwood had been battling health issues. A native of Scotland, he discovered his love for music in the 1950s, initially playing guitar before becoming a key figure in Santana’s sound. He also performed with a variety of notable acts, including Jeff Beck Group and Average White Band, leaving an indelible mark on the music world.
Tributes have continued to flood in, with The Magic of Santana tribute band sharing their sadness on Facebook, writing, “We are so sad! We just heard that Alex J Ligertwood passed away! He was one of the best singers on this planet, and we will deeply miss him. Thank you Alex, for everything!”
