Davina McCall has left her fans heartbroken after opening up about a deeply emotional moment that triggered a breakdown, recalling how she once forgot to pick up her daughter from nursery, which led her to relive painful memories of her own childhood abandonment.
The 58-year-old TV star, who has won the nation’s heart with her candidness and strength, fought back tears as she spoke about the heartbreaking moment on Your Mind, Your Rules podcast. For McCall, what seemed like a simple parenting mistake became a trigger for deep-rooted trauma that she has carried with her since childhood.
A Painful Memory of Abandonment
In an emotional interview, Davina shared how, years ago, she was late to pick up her daughter Tilly, now 22, from nursery. What should have been a small, easily forgivable mistake triggered a flood of painful memories from her own past. McCall recalled being an hour late to pick up Tilly after her first day at nursery, only to learn that Tilly had already been collected by her friend Nicola.
“I sat in the car and started crying. I couldn’t drive, I couldn’t see,” McCall admitted, revealing how the emotional weight of the situation completely overwhelmed her. “I had to just get it out. And then I drove, still crying, to Nicola’s house. She opened the door, and I collapsed. I just kept asking, ‘Is Tilly ok?’”
But Nicola reassured Davina that Tilly was happy, playing in the garden, completely unaware of her mother’s distress. However, for Davina, the situation felt like a painful echo of her own childhood, when her mother’s abandonment left her feeling insecure and uncertain of her place in the world.
The Trauma of Her Own Mother’s Absence
Davina has never shied away from speaking about the trauma she experienced growing up. At just three years old, she was sent to live with her father’s parents in Surrey, while her French mother remained in Paris. Davina would occasionally visit her mother, but she never felt truly secure in the relationship.
McCall revealed that, as a child, she was never 100% sure if her mother would show up to pick her up from the airport when she traveled to Paris. “I was never 100% sure that I was going to get collected from the airport,” she explained. “My mum wouldn’t be there, and then there would be phone calls, and then there would be, ‘Oh s**t,’ and then there would be somebody coming.”
For Davina, these feelings of uncertainty and abandonment laid the foundation for much of her emotional struggles in adulthood, including her battles with addiction. She has openly discussed her struggles with heroin in her twenties and has connected this experience to the feelings of abandonment she experienced as a child.
Addiction and Recovery: A Long Road to Self-Love
During her recovery from heroin addiction, Davina was encouraged to look at herself in a mirror each night and tell herself, “I love you.” This simple act, designed to help her rebuild self-worth, proved to be far harder than she could have imagined.
“I picked it up the first time, looked in the mirror, and burst into tears,” she confessed. “It took me over a year to say those words to myself.”
But despite her painful past, Davina has worked tirelessly to heal, using her experiences to help others through her work and her public persona. She’s become a champion for mental health and well-being, encouraging others to face their struggles head-on, just as she has done.
A Five-Star Lesbian and Her New Love Life
In a more recent interview, Davina also opened up about her evolving love life, revealing that she now identifies as a “five-star lesbian.” In an intimate discussion, she admitted that she has explored her sexuality later in life, a journey she now fully embraces.
“I’m a five-star lesbian,” she said with a smile, jokingly referring to the term “gold star lesbian,” which refers to someone who has never been with a man. Davina’s candidness about her sexuality and sex life is part of her ongoing effort to demystify and normalize LGBTQ+ experiences, particularly for women who, like her, have spent years navigating their sexual identities.
The Power of Honesty and Healing
While the podcast revealed some painful moments from Davina’s past, it also highlighted her resilience and ability to heal. She’s emerged from her struggles stronger and more open than ever, encouraging others to confront their own trauma and embrace the healing process.
From battling addiction to confronting the deep wounds of childhood, Davina McCall has proven that it’s never too late to start healing and find peace within oneself. Her honesty and vulnerability continue to inspire her fans, showing that even the most beloved stars carry their own personal battles, but they too can overcome them with strength, courage, and compassion.
