BBC to Celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th Birthday with Special Live Event

The BBC has confirmed plans for a special live broadcast to mark Sir David Attenborough’s remarkable 100th birthday, celebrating a century of his extraordinary contributions to natural history broadcasting. The event will take place on May 8, 2026, at the iconic Royal Albert Hall in London, bringing together celebrities, musicians, and wildlife experts to pay tribute to the beloved broadcaster.

A Lifetime of Wonders

Sir David Attenborough’s relationship with the BBC dates back to 1952, when he first joined the corporation. His career as a broadcaster, naturalist, and environmental advocate has spanned more than seven decades, during which he has brought the beauty and fragility of the natural world into the lives of millions. From Zoo Quest in 1954 to his recent projects, including the Planet Earth and Frozen Planet series, Sir David’s voice has been synonymous with groundbreaking wildlife documentaries.

The event will also feature musical performances, with Bastille frontman Dan Smith joining the BBC Concert Orchestra to perform “Pompeii,” a song featured in Planet Earth III. Icelandic band Sigur Rós will also perform “Hoppípolla,” a track associated with the Planet Earth series. These performances will be interwoven with some of the most memorable wildlife moments from Sir David’s acclaimed documentaries.

A Night to Remember

Throughout the 90-minute programme, the BBC Concert Orchestra will perform iconic pieces of music that have accompanied Sir David’s documentaries, including the dramatic chase scene from Planet Earth II featuring snakes and iguanas, as well as the powerful orca hunting sequence from Frozen Planet II. British singer Sienna Spiro and Paraguayan harpist Francisco Yglesias will also perform, including a piece from Zoo Quest, Sir David’s first wildlife series.

The special broadcast, titled David Attenborough’s 100 Years On Planet Earth, will air on BBC One and iPlayer at 8:30 PM on May 8, 2026, Sir David’s 100th birthday. The event will be jointly staged and produced by BBC Studios Music Productions and the BBC Natural History Unit, in partnership with The Open University.
