Once the dazzling queen of Weatherfield, Julie Goodyear, forever remembered as Coronation Street’s iconic Bet Lynch, now faces a daily, heartbreaking struggle with dementia. At 81, the woman who captivated the nation with her bold, larger-than-life personality now finds herself living in the shadow of a cruel diagnosis. And her devoted husband, Scott Brand, has revealed the devastating toll the battle has taken on him.
“I Thought I Could Do It All Alone…”
When Julie was first diagnosed, Scott promised himself he could manage it — no outside help, no carers. He would be her sole carer. Giving up his job, he dedicated himself entirely to looking after Julie.
But that decision came with a high cost.
“I wasn’t coping,” Scott admits candidly. “Caring for Julie is my priority — but as a lone carer, it was killing me.”
The pressure weighed heavily on him. Julie had always managed the finances, but with dementia stripping her of that ability, Scott was thrown into a world of constant change and overwhelming responsibility.
“Julie did it all with ease. Now she can’t even recognise the value of money,” he reflects, the emotional burden clear in his voice.
The Moment He Realised He Needed Help
The strain became unbearable, and Scott realised he couldn’t continue on his own.
“I would advise anyone on this journey to accept help straight away,” Scott confesses, looking back at how critical that decision was. Through Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Advisers, he found the support he desperately needed.
“That support has been a lifeline,” Scott shares. “Without it, I honestly don’t know how I would have coped.”
“I Miss The Woman She Was”
As part of the Alzheimer’s Society’s campaign, The Long Goodbye, Scott opened up about the painful reality of watching Julie fade bit by bit.
“I miss the fun-loving wife Julie always was,” Scott says softly, voice cracking. “Her big personality… the way she lit up every room. Watching that slowly fade is incredibly painful.”
The battle against dementia is not just physical — it’s emotional, with Scott enduring the loss of the woman he fell in love with, day by day.
A Love Story Tested by Time
Julie and Scott met in 2006 when he delivered plaster to her home in Rochdale, a chance encounter that blossomed into a love story. They married the following year in 2007, after Julie’s decades-long career as Bet Lynch on Coronation Street came to an end.
Now, the glitz and glam of Weatherfield seem like a distant memory. What remains is a quieter, more challenging love — a love that has been tested in ways neither of them could have imagined.
The Silent Struggle of Carers
By speaking out, Scott has given voice to the thousands of carers across the UK who are silently battling the effects of dementia every day. His story is one of love, sacrifice, and overwhelming pain, but it is also a testament to the strength of those who care for their loved ones through the toughest of circumstances.
