Fearne Cotton has revealed the emotional truth behind the jaw tumours she had removed in December 2024, and what she believes triggered their growth – stress.
In a heartfelt interview on Jamie Laing’s podcast, the 44-year-old presenter shared her personal journey with the tumours and how she came to realise that it was time to make some major life changes.
A Health Scare That Changed Fearne’s Life
Fearne explained that the small lump on her face had been there for almost two years, something she would often fiddle with absentmindedly while reading to her children. But it wasn’t until she had a scan that the truth became clear – she had a tumour on her parotid gland, which is responsible for saliva production.
Reflecting on the moment, Fearne said, “I think Dr. Rangan Chatterjee has stats in one of his books that 95% of physical ailments are caused by stress.” The diagnosis, though benign, was a major wake-up call for Fearne, and she knew things had to change.
A Wake-Up Call to Slow Down
Despite being told the tumours were non-cancerous, Fearne knew she couldn’t ignore the signs anymore. “It felt like a bit of a wake-up call,” she said, realising she needed to prioritize her mental health and step back from the constant pressure of burnout.
Fearne admitted that after the operation, it was clear that her lifestyle needed to shift. “I knew I had to change things and not get to that point of absolute burnout, constantly.”
Fearne’s Honest Reflections on Therapy and Writing
Earlier this month, Fearne appeared on This Morning with host Ben Shephard, who became emotional as she discussed what inspired her new book, Likeable: How I Broke Free From the Need to Please.
Ben shared, “I couldn’t stop reading it. It’s an extraordinary testament to what you’ve lived through… your experience was so hard for me to think about. But sharing it is so important.”
Fearne explained that a major turning point for her came during a therapy session, where her therapist asked her a simple yet profound question: “How important is it that I like you?” Fearne broke down in tears, realising how far she had gone in trying to please others, even at the cost of her own well-being.
Overcoming Shame and Moving Forward
Fearne also opened up about the impact of her past struggles, particularly dealing with the fallout from her former relationship with paedophile Ian Watkins. Fearne recalled the intense shame she felt, the depression, and the anger she shoved down to keep pushing forward in her career.
But through therapy, Fearne has learned to release that shame, acknowledging that it was never hers to carry. “It belongs to others, mostly men,” she said, referring to those who had mistreated her and left her burdened with their shame.
A New Chapter: Fearne’s Journey to Healing
In the wake of her health scare and personal struggles, Fearne has embarked on a new chapter, embracing a life of honesty, self-care, and authenticity. “It’s time to stop pleasing others and start pleasing myself,” she said.
Her powerful journey serves as a reminder that it’s never too late to make changes for the better, especially when it comes to mental health. With the love and support of her family, Fearne is ready to embrace her next chapter with a newfound sense of strength and resilience.
