In a revealing interview, Vernon shared a vivid memory of a family holiday in Portugal, where he was forced to step in to save his younger brother, Steven, from drowning. “One time I saved my brother from drowning, he had dived into the pool and started panicking, so he owes me one for that,” Vernon recalled. It’s a moment that stuck with him, and one that shaped his bond with his brother forever.

But that wasn’t the only time Vernon found himself in a life-threatening situation during his travels.

As a teenager, Vernon had another terrifying experience on a school ski trip to Northern Italy. He was skiing without a helmet, and after venturing out onto the icy slopes, he took a nasty fall. “I wasn’t wearing a helmet, went on the icy slopes, fell, hit my head, and ended up with a concussion,” Vernon explained. It was a scary moment for him, and one that could have been much worse.

If that wasn’t enough, Vernon’s travel woes continued when he suffered from horrible food poisoning while in Marrakesh. He described the ordeal as being so severe that it left him in the fetal position for three weeks. “I was vomiting, having hot sweats while freezing, and experiencing terrible hallucinations,” Vernon said, reflecting on one of the most excruciating times in his life. The illness was so debilitating that it put a serious damper on his trip, leaving him bedridden and struggling to recover.

And as if that wasn’t enough drama, Vernon had a near-death experience during a sailing trip in Turkey with his wife, Tess Daly. While fishing off the boat, the couple caught a puffer fish—a highly toxic fish known for being dangerous. “We caught a puffer fish, and the captain shouted: ‘Do not touch that! Poison; highly toxic!’” Vernon recalled. Luckily, the couple avoided disaster, but it was a close call.

Despite these near-death experiences abroad, Vernon’s family life with his wife, Tess Daly, and their daughters, Phoebe, 20, and Amber, 16, seems to be thriving. While the couple is notoriously private about their family life, they recently opened up about their unconventional parenting style.

“We play good cop, bad cop, but alternate the roles,” Vernon revealed about their approach to raising their daughters. The couple’s strategy keeps their kids “guessing” and ensures they maintain a balanced approach to discipline.

“We’ve not pushed them in a certain direction. It’s totally up to them,” Vernon explained. “As a parent, you can only hold their hand and say, ‘This is right or wrong’ for so long. There’s got to be a point where you take them off the lead and let them discover life.”
