British TV and theatre legend Jonathan Harvey is set to be honoured with a Special Recognition Award at the British LGBT Awards this Thursday. The accolade celebrates his decades-long contribution to British culture and his tireless work promoting LGBTQ+ representation on screen.
Jonathan, whose acclaimed works include Beautiful Thing, Coronation Street, and the iconic comedy Gimme Gimme Gimme, will receive the award from Corrie legend Helen Worth and BAFTA nominee Ellis Howard at a glamorous Mayfair ceremony. The event will be attended by stars including Boy George, fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier, and TV favourite Rylan Clark.
Reflecting on the honour, Jonathan said: “Throughout my career, I’ve simply tried to tell authentic stories that felt truthful — stories about love, identity, friendship and belonging… To be recognised by the LGBTQ+ community in this way means an enormous amount to me.”
From his early theatre successes with plays like Mohair (1988), Wildfire (1992) and Babies (1993) — which earned him the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright Award — to his extensive TV credits including West End Girls, Love Junkie, and Murder Most Horrid, Jonathan’s work has consistently brought authentic queer stories to mainstream audiences.
Sarah Garrett, founder of the British LGBT Awards, said: “Jonathan has led the way in authentic storytelling and has inspired screenwriters across the world to better depict healthy and nuanced same-sex relationships… His courage, humour, and humanity continue to inspire new generations of writers, performers, and audiences.”
This award is a recognition not just of Jonathan Harvey’s extraordinary creative achievements, but of his lasting impact on LGBTQ+ culture and visibility in the UK and beyond.
