‘This Could Be My Last Update…’ – Paula Hudgell Shares Heartbreaking Post After Life-Saving Surgery Amid Stage-Four Cancer Battle
In an emotional and deeply personal update, Paula Hudgell, the adoptive mother of double-amputee hero Tony Hudgell, has shared a heartbreaking message after undergoing one of the most gruelling surgeries of her life. The 58-year-old former nurse, battling stage-four cancer, revealed the emotional and physical toll her condition has taken, describing the procedure as “brutal.”

Paula, who has been fighting bowel cancer that spread to the peritoneal lining, recently underwent life-saving HIPEC (Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) and CRS (Cytoreductive Surgery), in addition to a hernia repair. Despite enduring immense pain and exhaustion during the first week of recovery, she displayed her trademark resilience, pushing herself to stand and walk again, albeit with immense difficulty.

“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Paula admitted in a raw Instagram post, sharing a photo of herself and Tony, “but it’s also the thing that’s allowed me to go home after 12 days and be with my family again.” Her words resonate with strength and determination as she continues to fight.
In a rare moment of hope, Paula received the news she had been waiting for: test results revealed only a single nodule with no signs of cancer in the removed organs. The relief was overwhelming. “It was the best news we could have hoped for,” Paula shared, her tears of relief reflecting the weight of the journey.

However, Paula’s battle is far from over. She now faces a new challenge: lung nodules. A CT scan is scheduled, and Paula awaits further discussions with her oncologist to determine the next steps. Should surgery not be an option, she faces another round of chemotherapy. Yet, with remarkable strength, Paula stated, “Either way, we keep going.”
Paula’s journey began in 2022 when she was first diagnosed with bowel cancer after years of being misdiagnosed. Despite undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, the cancer returned, now classified as stage-four. The emotional toll of this diagnosis has been profound, but Paula’s unwavering commitment to fight has never faltered. Her advocacy work, which led to the passing of “Tony’s Law,” continues to inspire others, and her resilience in the face of adversity has earned her immense respect and admiration.
While Paula’s fight remains intense, her primary concern is her son, Tony. The young hero, who overcame severe injuries from his birth parents, has flourished under Paula’s care. But now, he worries about his mother, often expressing concern by saying, “I’m worried about Mummy.” Paula has kept the full extent of her illness a secret from him, hoping to preserve his innocent belief that everyone survives, shielding him from the heartbreaking reality for as long as possible.
Tony continues to inspire with his incredible achievements, including raising more than £1.8 million for children’s charities. As his mother battles for her life, his courage serves as a beacon of hope for both of them.
Paula’s strength, love, and commitment to her family underscore the extraordinary power of a mother’s love. Her ongoing fight, combined with the unwavering support of her son Tony, is a testament to their shared journey of hope, courage, and survival.
