Samuel West Opens Up About the Heartbreaking Loss of His Mother, Prunella Scales: “I Got My Love for the Outdoors From Her”

In an emotional moment shared during their Sam & Ade Go Birding series, Samuel West bravely opened up about the painful loss of his beloved mother, Prunella Scales, and their final conversation before her death. The 59-year-old actor recalled the sorrow of losing his mother, who passed away at 93 following a long battle with dementia in October. Her death came just a year after the passing of her husband, Timothy West.Samuel West kìm nén nước mắt khi chia sẻ về cái chết đau lòng của mẹ anh, Prunella Scales, và một trong những cuộc trò chuyện cuối cùng của hai mẹ con.

Prunella Scales, best known for her iconic role as Sybil Fawlty in Fawlty Towers, was celebrated for her incredible career in television. Samuel, alongside his brother Joseph, paid tribute to their mother after her death, remembering her as a “darling mother” who had been the anchor of their lives.

Reflecting on his mother’s health struggle, Samuel shared that despite Prunella’s need for constant care in her later years, she still managed to engage with the world around her, showing a resilience that touched those around her. “She was never really angry or anxious,” Samuel said. “She was quite content, which is extraordinary because it could have been so much worse.”The celebrated actress was best-known for her role as Sybil Fawlty - the long-suffering wife of John Cleese's hotel owner Basil - in the BBC comedy

The most poignant part of Samuel’s tribute came when he recalled one of his last clear conversations with his mother when she was 91. “She said, ‘How old am I?’ and I said, ‘You’re 91, ma,’ and she responded, ’91?’” Samuel laughed, remembering her perfectly timed and beautifully enunciated response.'I certainly got my love of the outdoors from her,' Samuel said

Despite her deteriorating health, Prunella was still able to engage in meaningful conversations, including one with Queen Camilla in 2024. But Samuel revealed the painful impact of dementia, sharing how he longed for the deep conversations they once shared.

In the episode filmed last October, Samuel opened up about his grief, revealing that Prunella passed away just one day after what would have been her 62nd wedding anniversary. To honor her, they visited Shaftesbury Avenue, where the lights were dimmed in her memory—a gesture that would have “astonished and delighted her,” but left Samuel deeply emotional.Sam said although his mother came to need constant care and had lost her husband Timothy West last November, aged 90, she would still get out the house (pictured in 1999)

Samuel also fondly remembered the extraordinary relationship between Prunella and Timothy, which was filled with laughter and joy throughout the years. “She always had a sense of contentment,” he said, reflecting on how their relationship helped them face life’s challenges.

Prunella Scales’ legacy continues to be cherished by her family, friends, and colleagues, with tributes flooding in from fans and co-stars alike, including John Cleese, who shared fond memories of working with her on Fawlty Towers.Sam said: 'I think my mother didn't love being herself and that was one of the hardest things about dementia, because as soon as she couldn't pretend to be somebody else she got upset' (pictured in 1999)

As Samuel continues to navigate his grief, he finds solace in honoring his mother’s memory, especially through their shared love for the outdoors and birdwatching—a passion that has helped him cope with his loss.

The emotional episode of Sam & Ade Go Birding will air as part of their ongoing Channel 5 series, where Samuel continues to celebrate his mother’s life and legacy.
