Prunella, who captured the nation’s hearts as Sybil Fawlty, the long-suffering wife of Basil Fawlty in the iconic BBC comedy, passed away at the age of 93 after a lengthy battle with dementia. Her death in October came just one year after the passing of her husband, renowned actor Timothy West. Samuel, 59, and his brother Joseph paid tribute to their “darling mother” in a heartfelt statement following her death.

In an emotional interview with Adrian Edmondson on Sam & Ade Go Birding, Samuel spoke candidly about the grief that has weighed on him since losing his mother. As the two embarked on a birdwatching adventure, Samuel shared a particularly poignant moment. “Since we last met, my mum died… just a week ago, one day after what would have been her 62nd wedding anniversary,” he said, his voice cracking with emotion. “We went down to Shaftesbury Avenue to see the theatre dim their lights for her, something that would have astonished and delighted her. But it floored me.”

Samuel recounted one of his last clear conversations with his mother, a brief but powerful exchange that took place when Prunella was 91. “She asked, ‘How old am I?’ and I told her, ‘You’re 91, mum.’ Her response, ’91?’ was beautifully timed and enunciated,” Samuel recalled, smiling through his tears at the memory.

Sam said: 'I think my mother didn't love being herself and that was one of the hardest things about dementia, because as soon as she couldn't pretend to be somebody else she got upset' (pictured in 1999)

Despite her decline in health, Prunella continued to engage with those around her, including a poignant interaction with Queen Camilla in 2024. Yet, Samuel revealed the profound sadness of losing the ability to converse with his mother as they once had, her words becoming fewer as the years passed.

Reflecting on his mother’s life, Samuel shared his admiration for the extraordinary bond she and his father, Timothy, had built over the years. “She was never really angry or anxious. She was always content, which is remarkable, given everything,” he shared, a quiet admiration for her resilience in his voice.

Prunella’s legacy as a beloved actress and mother remains etched in the hearts of those who knew her. Her passing marked the end of an era, and tributes have poured in from colleagues, fans, and friends alike, including Fawlty Towers co-star John Cleese, who fondly remembered their time together.

In this deeply moving episode of Sam & Ade Go Birding, Samuel continues to navigate his grief, celebrating his mother’s extraordinary life and the powerful connection they shared, even through the challenges dementia presented. As Samuel reflects on the love of the outdoors they both cherished, it is clear that Prunella Scales’ influence will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.
