Rylan Clark Opens Up on Infidelity, Divorce from Dan Neal, and Finding Love Again with Kennedy Bates

Rylan Clark has addressed the infidelity that led to the collapse of his six-year marriage to Dan Neal, speaking openly about the fallout and how he navigated one of the most difficult periods of his life. The 37-year-old presenter, known for his exuberant personality on TV, revealed the emotional impact of his actions for the first time during a candid appearance on The Assembly, where celebrities answer unfiltered questions from a live audience.

Rylan Clark was asked if he regretted telling his husband he had cheated on him as he addressed it for the first time in a new interview  on The AssemblyAn audience member directly asked Rylan whether he regretted telling his husband that he had cheated on him. “When you told your husband you cheated on him, he divorced you. Is honesty always the best policy?” the viewer inquired.

Rylan did not hesitate. “Yeah, I think it is,” he admitted. “I’m okay admitting I’m in the wrong because I don’t deal well with guilt, and I don’t deal well with secrets. It made me so ill, like so ill. It sounds terrible, but I’m glad it happened.”

Reflecting on the aftermath, Rylan described the overwhelming sense of devastation he felt. “It was truly like the feeling of having the rug pulled from under you,” he explained. “That’s the only way I can describe it. It’s like someone went like that, and I fell over, and I couldn’t get back up. [It was] like I broke both my arms and legs.”

At the height of his despair, Rylan returned to live with his mother because he could not bear to stay in the house he shared with Dan, haunted by memories of their time together. “I thought I wasn’t going to get out of it,” he said. “I went back to live with my mum because there were too many memories of things in the house.”

Rylan also addressed his perspective on responsibility as a public LGBTQ+ figure. During a conversation with Stephen Fry on his podcast Rylan: How to Be in Love, he was asked whether he felt pressure to represent gay marriage and whether his divorce might reflect negatively on the idea of same-sex unions. “There was part of me that felt like a complete and utter failure,” Rylan admitted. “I felt like I’d failed personally, but I felt like I’d found publicly on behalf of—the gays! You know, I’m not ‘head gay,’ it’s not that.”

Stephen reassured him, joking that Rylan was “not exactly a poster child for gayness,” to which Rylan agreed. Yet he acknowledged the stakes of public visibility, particularly in a society still navigating acceptance of LGBTQ+ relationships. “You want to get married, you can get married. But when it doesn’t work out, you don’t want people saying, ‘See, that’s why they shouldn’t get married,’” he explained.

Rylan’s reflections on love and heartbreak came alongside discussion of his current relationship with Kennedy Bates. The couple went public in January, sharing photos of a sun-soaked getaway to the Maldives. The pair stayed at the luxurious Adaaran Select Meedhupparu resort, enjoying cocktails on the beach and moments of playful affection. Kennedy even drew a huge heart on Rylan’s back in suncream, with the lovebirds holding hands as they strolled along the sand and swam together in the crystal-clear water.

Rylan captioned one of the Maldives posts: “Maldives. You were perfect. New year, new friends, new beginnings.” Kennedy responded: “A fantastic little holiday we had.” Discussing Kennedy on The Assembly, Rylan admitted, “When I first started dating Kennedy, and I told [my mum] about him, she was like, ‘He’s handsome,’ and he is handsome. And then she was like, ‘So, has anything happened?’ And I’m like, ‘Shut up! Shut up!’”

The presenter, 37, revealed his infidelity to his husband, Dan Neal, which caused the downfall of his six-year marriage back in 2021 (pictured in 2016)Returning to his reflection on past mistakes, Rylan shared the personal growth he has experienced since the breakdown of his marriage. Following his confession of infidelity, Dan ended the relationship, leaving Rylan devastated. During that period, he experienced severe emotional distress, even contemplating suicide, and his weight dropped to just nine stone.

Rylan chronicled these experiences in his second autobiography, TEN: The Decade That Changed My Future, offering readers an unflinching look at the turmoil of heartbreak and self-discovery. “I got in a relationship quite young and just went with it. Now I know I’m my own person. I’m not going to settle for something that’s not right,” he wrote. “In a way, it’s been a bit of a gift. I’m happy to have sex with someone and that’s that, that’s not a problem. But do I want more? Of course I want more. Am I going to enjoy myself on the way? Absolutely.”

The presenter’s honesty and willingness to discuss the darker moments of his life have resonated with fans, offering a rare glimpse into the challenges behind the bright TV persona. He highlighted the importance of self-awareness and authenticity, acknowledging that past mistakes were formative, and that the experience has guided him toward a healthier, more fulfilling relationship with Kennedy.

Despite the very public nature of his previous marriage, Rylan has shown resilience. His journey underscores the complexity of relationships in the public eye, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community, where scrutiny can magnify both triumphs and failures. By embracing transparency, Rylan provides a model of accountability and emotional honesty.

Now, as he navigates life with Kennedy, Rylan balances his career with personal growth, enjoying a relationship built on trust and shared humor. The Maldives holiday snapshots reflected not just relaxation, but the new chapter of hope and happiness that has followed heartbreak.
