Phil Collins Makes Rare Public Appearance at 75, Showcases Resilience Amid Health Struggles

Music icon Phil Collins, 75, made a rare public outing this week at Buckingham Palace, celebrating the 50th anniversary of The King’s Trust. The Genesis legend, dressed in a sharp black suit and red tie, was seen using crutches alongside fellow music icons Sir Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster, and his ex-wife Jill Collins, mother of actress Lily Collins. Fans were quick to note his determination and enduring presence despite significant health challenges.

Jill Collins shared images from the event on social media, writing: “Yesterday was a truly memorable afternoon spent at Buckingham Palace to celebrate The King’s Trust 50th Anniversary Party! Despite the torrential rain, we were proud and honoured to be there and share a few private moments with King Charles, who seemed genuinely pleased to see Phil, the very first ambassador of the Trust 40 years ago.”

In recent years, Collins has faced serious health issues, including multiple knee surgeries, an injured vertebra causing nerve damage, acute pancreatitis, kidney complications, foot drop, and lingering effects from COVID-19. The musician now relies on orthopedic shoes and a 24-hour live-in nurse to manage medication and daily care.

Speaking to Zoe Ball on BBC Two’s Eras – In Conversation, Collins reflected on his health journey: “I’ve had challenges with my knee… everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. But now I’ve got a knee that works, and I can walk, albeit with assistance, crutches or whatever.”

Despite these setbacks, Collins remains optimistic about the future. He revealed plans to return to the studio to revisit unfinished music: “Apart from just being back to being totally mobile and healthy, I want to go in there and have a fiddle about and see if there’s more music. You’ve gotta start doing it to see if you can do it. Otherwise, you don’t do it. That is something on my horizon.”

With decades of success as both a member of Genesis and a solo artist, Collins has left an indelible mark on pop and rock music, producing timeless hits such as In the Air Tonight, Two Hearts, and Easy Lover. Beyond music, he has been a dedicated philanthropist, serving as the first ambassador for The Prince’s Trust 40 years ago.

Today, Phil Collins is estimated to be the second wealthiest drummer in the world, with a net worth of £198 million, second only to Beatles legend Ringo Starr. At 75, leaning on crutches but full of determination, Collins continues to inspire fans worldwide, proving that passion, resilience, and love for music endure despite life’s challenges.
