Loose Women star Nadia Sawalha’s husband, Mark Adderley, has been suspended from the Green Party after posting a series of controversial videos on his YouTube channel, which have been described as antisemitic. Adderley, who was standing as a Green candidate in the Croydon elections, faced intense backlash for comparing Israel to Nazi Germany and making claims about Mossad’s involvement in various international incidents, including terror attacks against Jewish people.
The Green Party’s decision to suspend Adderley came after advocacy groups, political figures, and Jewish organizations raised concerns about the content of his videos. Adderley’s online platform featured numerous discussions in which he referenced “Israeli false flag” operations and made unsubstantiated claims about assassinations, including that of US political figure Charlie Kirk, and a missile attack on a British base in Cyprus.
The controversy deepened after Adderley’s comments blaming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the Bondi Beach mass shooting in Australia and for jeopardizing the safety of Jewish people worldwide. These remarks, along with others that continued to surface in his videos, led to public outcry, including from Labour MP Steve Reed, who criticized the Green Party’s handling of antisemitism within its ranks.
In response to the suspension, Adderley expressed his outrage on social media, claiming he was “truly, deeply, viscerally disgusted” by the Green Party’s action. He vehemently denied the accusations, asserting that he had spent his life fighting against racism and standing in solidarity with Jewish communities. He added, “I have stood shoulder to shoulder with Jewish friends, comrades, and communities against genuine hatred.”
Nadia Sawalha, known for her outspoken nature, also took to social media, expressing her support for her husband. She called the Green Party’s decision “an utter disgrace” and shared a video in which she defended her husband’s stance on Palestinian issues. Sawalha suggested that her husband had been unfairly treated by the Green Party, which she claimed had acted “in a lazy way.”
Despite the suspension, Sawalha affirmed her ongoing membership with the Green Party, though she admitted her disagreement with their decision. She encouraged her followers to view the video discussing the suspension, and posted a message condemning Netanyahu’s policies, saying, “Being anti-Netanyahu’s genocide is NOT antisemitic.”
Adderley’s videos have been widely criticized for their incendiary content, with some even drawing comparisons to Holocaust denial. In one video, Adderley compared Israeli policies in the Middle East to the expansionist aims of Nazi Germany, claiming that Israel posed a threat to global sovereignty. In another, he suggested that the Mossad, Israel’s intelligence agency, was behind the assassination of Charlie Kirk, a claim he made without providing any evidence.
The Green Party has distanced itself from Adderley’s statements, stating that his views do not align with the party’s stance on racism or antisemitism. Party leader Zack Polanski welcomed the suspension, emphasizing that the Green Party is committed to combating antisemitism and ensuring that its platform remains inclusive and respectful of all communities.
Mark Adderley, however, rejected the accusations of antisemitism, stating that his opposition to Zionism was not equivalent to hatred of Jewish people. He further argued that questioning Israeli policies and calling out the actions of the Netanyahu government should not be seen as antisemitic, but rather as an essential part of political discourse.
The controversy surrounding Adderley has ignited a broader debate about free speech, political correctness, and the limits of acceptable discourse within political parties. Supporters of Adderley argue that he is being unjustly persecuted for expressing his views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, while critics contend that his remarks are dangerously inflammatory and cross the line into hate speech.
This suspension comes at a time of increasing scrutiny of political parties’ handling of antisemitism, particularly following the controversies surrounding former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. Many observers see the Green Party’s swift action as an effort to prevent a similar crisis within its ranks. The party has reiterated that it will continue to monitor and address issues of hate speech and discrimination in all its forms.
For now, Mark Adderley remains suspended from the Green Party, and the fallout from this controversy continues to unfold. While his wife, Nadia Sawalha, continues to defend him, many are questioning the future of their political careers and the broader implications for the Green Party’s reputation on matters of antisemitism.
The Green Party has pledged to continue its efforts to foster an inclusive, tolerant environment, but it is clear that this incident has tested the party’s commitment to that principle.
