The Married At First Sight star, 53, revealed that she had been diagnosed with colon cancer back in December 2023, and she had to have surgery to remove a 5cm tumourMel explained that she had undergone 16 rounds of chemotherapy while still filming MAFS, a process that demanded incredible strength. She had been due to start a new clinical trial this March, but her health rapidly declined over the holiday season. Despite the grim news, Mel’s determination to fight on is clear as she continues to be surrounded by her loving family—her husband Gareth and daughter Madison, 10.

Reflecting on her journey, Mel shared, “In December 2023, I was diagnosed with colon cancer. A tumour the size of a lemon was discovered and removed, and I was initially given the all-clear. However, during a routine scan in February 2024, small nodules were found in my lungs, and I was devastated to learn the cancer had spread.”

She went on to express her ongoing struggle, “After all the chemotherapy, I had hoped the new clinical trial could be my chance to beat this thing. But over Christmas, the headaches started, and the numbness down my right side got worse.” Sadly, the latest tests showed that the cancer had reached her brain, and despite her radiotherapy treatments, Mel’s doctors confirmed that no further treatments were possible.

In a lengthy caption she penned: 'My light is starting to fade - and quickly. But I am still here, still fighting, and surrounded by the most incredible love'“I don’t know how much time I have left, but I do know I’ll keep fighting,” Mel wrote. “Simple tasks are getting harder, and I’m relying more and more on my beautiful family to help me. But I’m still here, surrounded by love.” 🧡

In her heartfelt post, Mel shared her gratitude for the incredible outpouring of support she has received from fans since her initial diagnosis, and urged others not to ignore symptoms. “If something doesn’t feel right, please get it checked out. It could save your life,” she urged, speaking candidly about how she had ignored symptoms like pain and constipation before her diagnosis, and how women, in particular, often dismiss health issues.

Mel’s message resonates deeply with fans, and she urged people to take note of any changes in their health and seek medical advice. “It’s not just an old person’s disease anymore. I’ve been flooded with messages from people in their twenties and thirties saying they’ve had the same diagnosis, or similar symptoms. Thanks for the nudge to get it checked out.”

Friends and fans rushed to the comments to share their condolences following the sad newsFans and celebrities alike have flooded the comments with love and support. Dawn French commented, “What a nourishing, bright light you are. Sending you tons of this…,” while Kerry Katona shared her heartfelt message, “Sending you so much strength and love.” 🌟

Mel’s battle with cancer has also led to her decision to step away from her role on MAFS Australia after starring on the show for over 12 seasons. In a statement released last month, Mel explained that her health struggles, along with the challenge of balancing life between the UK and Australia, had made continuing her role unsustainable. “It’s become clear I need to put my family, health, and time at the centre of my life,” she said, confirming that her departure was a difficult but necessary decision.

The relationship expert, who has been a core part of the experiment since season two, confirmed last month she would no longer appear on MAFS (Pictured L-R: MAFS John Aiken, Mel and Alessandra Rampolla)Through her work on MAFS, Mel has become a familiar face, guiding couples through turbulent commitments and supporting them during some of their most challenging moments. Her contributions to the show have been invaluable, but now, she is focusing on the most important role of all—being a mother and wife, surrounded by the love of her family. 💖
