Judith Chalmers, Legendary Presenter of Wish You Were Here…?, Dies Aged 90
Judith Chalmers, the beloved television presenter renowned for hosting ITV’s travel show Wish You Were Here…?, has passed away peacefully at the age of 90 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She died at home surrounded by her family, marking the end of a remarkable life devoted to broadcasting and travel journalism.

Chalmers’ career spanned more than six decades, beginning at age 13 with BBC Northern Children’s Hour. She went on to present daytime television magazine shows such as Good Afternoon, and radio programmes including Family Favourites and Woman’s Hour on the BBC during the 1960s. Her most iconic work came with Wish You Were Here…?, which she hosted from 1974 to 2003, earning her widespread recognition and an OBE in 1994 for services to broadcasting.

In addition to her travel programme, Chalmers presented Come Dancing for the BBC between 1961 and 1965 before moving to ITV, cementing her status as a familiar and comforting presence on British television.

Her family released a statement expressing both grief and gratitude: “After an extraordinary life with more than 60 years dedicated to broadcasting and countless adventures around the world, Judy passed away last night, surrounded by her beloved family after many years fighting Alzheimer’s.” They added, “We will miss her greatly, but she leaves a treasure trove of joyful memories.”


Chalmers is survived by her husband, former sports commentator Neil Durden-Smith, their two children, and six grandchildren. In 2022, she was appointed “Director of Smiles” at Heathrow Airport, a role reflecting her enduring warmth and public appeal. Tributes have poured in from fans and colleagues, celebrating a career that touched multiple generations and made her an enduring figure in British television.
