Johnny Ball, 87, Reflects on Prostate Cancer Battle as He Admits ‘I Don’t Have Long Left’

Speaking candidly to The Mirror, Johnny admitted, “I’ve been kicked in the teeth in every possible way by life and by situations and by people. But I still cannot help but smile. I have my wife, my dog, my life.” Despite his health battles and personal struggles, Johnny remains remarkably upbeat, saying he is “very happy with my life” and feels “blessed with more years” after overcoming cancer.

Reflecting on his battle with prostate cancer, Johnny shared that it was a tough period, with moments where he thought he might be nearing the end. “I don’t have long left,” Johnny said. “But I want to spend it with a smile on my face.”

A Tough Cancer Journey

Johnny first went public with his diagnosis in September 2025, revealing that he had undergone three months of daily radiation treatment. He shared that, after treatment, he felt “lucky” to be doing well and had come through it. “It’s been a wonderful relief,” Johnny said of his recovery, adding that he considers himself fortunate when thinking about friends who didn’t survive their cancer battles.

As a father of three and grandfather to six, Johnny has a strong family support system, including his wife Dianne, with whom he recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Johnny is also close with his daughter, Zoe Ball, who is a well-known TV presenter.

Johnny stays in excellent physical shape, crediting his fitness to a simple daily workout routine. He shared that his exercise regimen includes a “bending and stretching routine” followed by “lifting two 2kg dumbbells” for a total of about six to seven minutes each day. His diet, including a breakfast of “cereal with prunes”, and the occasional “two pints of beer” in the evening, also helps him maintain his health.
