Jane McDonald has opened up about the heartbreak of losing her late fiancé, Eddie Rothe, admitting she found it too painful to write music about him herself.
Appearing on Lorraine, the singer and TV favourite said she needed help from collaborators to create a tribute to Eddie, who died from lung cancer in 2021 at the age of 67.
Jane explained that grief made the process incredibly difficult, saying she simply “couldn’t write about Ed.” But with support, she was able to turn the song into something bigger than her own loss.
The former cruise ship singer said she now performs the tribute not only for herself, but for everyone in the audience who has lost someone they love.
Jane and Eddie were together for 13 years, and she has often spoken warmly about their relationship. Because Covid restrictions limited his funeral arrangements, Jane later dedicated her 2024 tour to celebrating his life.
Fans quickly rallied around her after the emotional interview, praising her strength, honesty and warmth. Carol Vorderman also paid tribute to Eddie, describing him as a lovely man who adored Jane.
Despite the pain, Jane said performing for her fans has helped her rebuild her life. Her message was simple but powerful: grief never truly disappears, but love can still be shared through music.
