Is Sir Keir Starmer’s Leadership at Risk? Dramatic Cabinet Overhaul Ahead of May Elections
In a desperate bid to salvage his leadership, Sir Keir Starmer is reportedly planning a major reshuffle of his cabinet as the Labour Party faces mounting pressure ahead of the May elections. Insider sources suggest that Starmer intends to reinstate former high-profile figures Angela Rayner and Louise Haigh, who both left government under controversial circumstances.

Rayner’s return hinges on the outcome of an ongoing HMRC investigation into unpaid stamp duty on a Brighton property, which was the cause of her previous departure. Haigh, meanwhile, resigned over the revelation of a past conviction related to a falsely reported stolen phone.
The proposed reshuffle, however, could come at a cost for Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Health Secretary Wes Streeting, both of whom are said to be at risk of being removed from their positions. The move signals a potential pivot to the left for Labour, which would bring about significant changes in economic policy, including the appointment of a new chancellor.
The reshuffle is seen as Starmer’s attempt to regain control of the party amid internal divisions and increasing backbench rebellion. With recent polling showing that Labour could lose up to 1,700 council seats in the upcoming elections, Starmer’s leadership has come under increasing scrutiny. In contrast, rival parties such as Reform UK are expected to make significant gains, with projections indicating that the Greens could also increase their seat count by approximately 600.
The outlook for Labour is particularly bleak in traditionally strong regions such as Wales, Scotland, London, and northern England, following a series of electoral defeats. The party’s recent by-election loss to the Greens in Gorton and Denton has only exacerbated concerns about its future prospects.

Sharon Graham, General Secretary of Unite, a major union whose recent funding cuts have left Labour reeling, voiced the concerns of many within the party: “I think after the May elections there will be a move to change leader because I think Labour are going to pretty much be decimated in those elections.”
Despite the urgency of the situation, Downing Street’s ability to execute such sweeping changes remains in doubt, with sources revealing that the Prime Minister has struggled to attract new staff to fill key roles.
With the May elections rapidly approaching, the coming weeks will be crucial for Sir Keir Starmer and his Labour leadership.
