Heartbreak and Hope: Sarah Parish’s Journey Through Grief 💔

In an emotionally charged revelation, actress Sarah Parish, known for her role in Stay Close, has opened up about the devastating loss of her first daughter, Ella-Jayne, who tragically passed away at just eight months old. The heart-wrenching loss, which occurred in January 2009, nearly destroyed her marriage and changed the course of her life forever.

Ella-Jayne was born with a severe heart defect: Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome, a condition that left her with a large hole in her heart and a defective valve. For the first four months of her life, Ella-Jayne fought for every breath in intensive care, surrounded by doctors and nurses who did everything in their power to keep her alive. But despite their best efforts, Sarah and her husband Jamie were forced to say goodbye to their precious daughter.

However, the heartbreak did not end there. For Sarah and Jamie, Ella-Jayne’s passing set in motion a series of events that would eventually lead them down a path of healing and giving back. In an extraordinary twist, the couple took an unusual step to deal with their grief — they traveled to Cambodia to work in an orphanage. It was in that foreign land, surrounded by those who had also experienced unimaginable loss, that Sarah and Jamie found the strength to carry on.

How Sarah Parish and husband Jamie dealt with the death of ...

“We knew we had to deal with Ella-Jayne’s death in our own way,” Sarah shared in an interview with The Guardian. “It was a personal thing for Jim and I. We needed to heal by doing something meaningful, something that would honor our daughter’s short life.”

A Heartfelt Tribute Turns into a Lifelong Mission

Out of this profound grief, a new purpose was born. Sarah and Jamie founded the Murray Parish Trust, a charity created to support the medical department at Southampton hospital, where Ella-Jayne had been cared for in her final days. What began as a modest fundraising effort — a couple of sponsored walks and a cake sale — has now transformed into a full-time charitable organization that has raised over £5 million.

Reflecting on the extraordinary growth of the charity, Sarah humbly admitted, “It has snowballed, somewhat.” Those funds have gone toward the purchase of new medical equipment for the children’s emergency and trauma department, making a lasting impact on the health and well-being of young children in the region.

How Tragedy Almost Destroyed Their Marriage

But while the charity became a symbol of hope, the aftermath of Ella-Jayne’s death almost tore Sarah and Jamie’s marriage apart. In an emotional piece she wrote for The Mail in 2017, Sarah revealed how grief, in all its rawness and intensity, created a chasm between her and her husband.

“Such an incredible loss inevitably puts an enormous strain on a relationship,” Sarah wrote. “People grieve in different ways, and it would take the most emotionally mature people to be able to cope with that. We made mistakes. We did things that didn’t work for each other. You either end up together, or you don’t.”

The day Ella-Jayne passed away was one Sarah will never forget. “The day she died, she took a bottle for the first time,” she recalled. “She held our gaze and smiled into our eyes. For Jim and I, it was very, very difficult. It left a huge hole in our lives.”

Sarah continued: “Losing a child is the hardest thing to happen to anyone. We had never experienced tragedy before Ella-Jayne died. We had never truly understood grief or loss.”

Despite the immense strain their grief placed on their relationship, Sarah and Jamie found a way to survive. “The pressure of grief is such that either you end up separating or, miraculously, you don’t,” Sarah said. “Jim and I have remained together, despite some terrible, terrible times.”
