Greg James Breaks Down in Tears Over Mother’s Day Message During Gruelling Red Nose Day Challenge Amid Dad’s Stroke Recovery

Greg James, the beloved Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, was visibly emotional as he received a heartfelt voice message from his mother during his 1,000km cycling challenge for Comic Relief. This challenging journey, which Greg is tackling on a tandem bike, takes him across the UK to raise funds for Red Nose Day. However, his determination to press on has been paired with a series of personal challenges, particularly the health crisis facing his father.

Tears and Love From Mum on Mother’s Day

Greg James cried when his mum left him a voice note during his Red Nose Day challenge on Sunday, as his dad recovers from a stroke

During day three of his grueling ride, Greg was moved to tears when he received a voice note from his mother on Mother’s Day. The emotional message read, “Hello sweetheart, it’s Mother’s Day, and I’m so lucky to be your mum. You make me proud every day. But I’m especially proud of the courage and determination you showed in tackling this massive challenge. You know how much I love you, and you know that I will be with you every inch of the way. Keep going, darling. You can do this.”

Greg, clearly touched, went on air to share that his mother had been a PE teacher and, before the challenge, had given him one of her whistles for inspiration. He reflected, “It was incredibly special to hear her voice, especially today, and I’m really grateful for her support.”

Greg’s Dad’s Health Battle: A Tough Journey

The Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, 40, who is cycling 1000km in eight days on a tandem bicycle for Comic Relief , received the sweet message during a gruelling day three of the challenge (pictured with his father)

Greg has been dealing with the emotional weight of his father’s health issues while pushing through his own monumental physical challenge. His dad, affectionately called Big Al, suffered a stroke shortly after undergoing a heart operation earlier this month. Despite the difficult circumstances, Greg remained focused on his Red Nose Day mission.

“Thank you to Sam and Danni for stepping in on Friday when I wasn’t here,” Greg said. “It’s been a tough time, my dad’s not well, but he’s still with us and fighting hard. It’s been an emotional rollercoaster, but I know he would want me to keep going.”

Greg shared that he had been visiting his dad in the ICU, and although he joked about the situation with the handsome doctor looking after him, he expressed his gratitude for the support he and his family had received.

Pressing On Despite Exhaustion

In the message, she said: 'Hello sweetheart, it's Mother's Day, and I'm so lucky to be your mum. 'You make me proud every day'

The cycling journey, which will span over 1,000km in just eight days, has already proven to be an intense physical test for Greg. He admitted to being exhausted and battling through constant fatigue. “Every time I thought I found a rhythm, another massive hill would appear,” he shared. “But seeing people cheering me on—kids waving at the top of a hill, clapping, banging saucepans—it’s overwhelming. It keeps me going, and I can’t thank everyone enough for their support.”

Fans across the country have turned out to cheer him on, making the challenging ride more bearable for the Radio 1 star.

Greg’s emotional vulnerability has resonated with fans and celebrity peers alike. As he shares his journey and personal story, many are expressing their support. His teammates and colleagues, including comedian Max Fosh, joined him on the ride for a brief stretch, though the physical challenge proved to be too much for him to continue after only a few kilometers.

Greg’s strength and dedication to the cause have been inspirational, showing that even in the face of immense personal hardship, the power of community and charity can drive a person forward.

His willingness to push through despite the personal struggles with his father’s health shows his deep commitment to the cause and his passion for making a difference.

“I’ve had a really tough time recently, but I’m doing this for a bigger reason,” Greg said. “I’m determined to complete this challenge and raise as much money as I can for the cause. It’s been overwhelming, but the support I’ve received is what’s keeping me going.”

As he pedals forward, Greg is also reflecting on what it means to fight through tough times, drawing strength from the love and encouragement he receives from his family, friends, and fans.
