Enya: The Reclusive Music Legend Living Off-Grid in a £2.5M Castle with 12 Cats
Enya, one of the world’s best-selling music artists with over 80 million albums sold, is renowned for her ethereal voice and unparalleled success in the music industry. Yet, despite her fame, the 64-year-old Irish singer has chosen a life far from the spotlight, residing in a remote castle in County Dublin, Ireland. There, she enjoys the company of her 12 cats and stays out of the public eye unless promoting new music.
Living in the grand Manderley Castle in Killiney, which she purchased for £2.5 million in 1997, Enya’s life is the definition of privacy. Nestled with stunning views of the Irish Sea, the singer has remained largely reclusive since her meteoric rise to fame in the late 1980s with the release of the iconic hit “Orinoco Flow (Sail Away).” Despite her immense success, Enya has never married or had children, and she has previously admitted to having a “dark and difficult” personality that makes her difficult to be around.
While her off-grid lifestyle has sparked fascination, celebrities such as Ncuti Gatwa and Dawn O’Porter have praised her privacy, with Ncuti calling it “goals” and Dawn calling her an “icon.” Enya’s decision to avoid the limelight is further confirmed by her reluctance to tour or perform live, despite her global recognition. She only emerges from her secluded life to promote her albums, and even then, only for limited appearances.
Living next door to U2’s Bono, Enya once shared a humorous anecdote during an appearance on This Morning in 2016, where she jokingly said the rockstar had popped over to borrow some sugar. Enya has also described her castle as “very small” and a “home,” despite its imposing exterior.
Her secluded life is not without its challenges, however. Enya has faced two terrifying stalking incidents, one of which saw a man appear at her parents’ pub in Donegal with a pendant featuring her picture, while another intruder gained access to her castle in 2005. These experiences have led Enya to steer clear of public events and fan meet-and-greets, solidifying her decision to stay out of the public eye.
Enya has no intention of changing her lifestyle. “It’s not a hanging offense not wanting to go to nightclubs,” she stated. Her love for music and need for personal space take precedence, with her focus firmly on creating melodies rather than seeking fame. In fact, she has previously admitted that “falling madly in love and getting married would be the most horrific thing that could happen.”
Though she rarely appears in public, Enya was spotted last year at a wedding in Donegal with her family, and in November, she participated in the documentary Glacaim Leat, which explored the legalization of gay marriage in Ireland. These rare public appearances have shown fans that Enya still has the same timeless charm.
With her mysterious and off-grid existence, Enya remains an enigma to the public — a music legend who is content to live her life away from the spotlight.
