Emma Willis Reveals She Underwent Keyhole Heart Surgery After Shocking Diagnosis
Emma Willis has left fans stunned today by revealing that she recently underwent keyhole heart surgery after discovering she had a hole in her heart. The 49-year-old TV presenter shared the news in an emotional Instagram post, admitting that she had been “blissfully unaware” of the condition until last year.
In her post, Emma thanked the medical team at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London for their exceptional care and support throughout her diagnosis and surgery journey. “A big humungous THANK YOU to the team at the Royal Brompton Hospital for their care and support,” she said.
Emma also expressed gratitude to her husband, Matt Willis, who was by her side throughout the process, and reflected on the shock of learning about her heart condition. “Turns out, I’ve been pottering around for 48 years blissfully unaware I had a hole in my heart. Isn’t it bonkers what’s happening in our bodies that we have no idea about?”
The condition, medically known as atrial septal defect (ASD), is a congenital heart disease where a hole exists in the wall between the two upper chambers of the heart. Often, people can live with ASD without realizing it, as the symptoms may not appear until later in life.
For Emma, the discovery came after a series of medical investigations last year. She went on to explain the procedure: “A few weeks ago, I had keyhole heart surgery, which feels very strange to write, and even stranger when I say it out loud.”
Keyhole surgery is a less invasive procedure compared to traditional open-heart surgery, involving small incisions to access the heart and resulting in a faster recovery time. For Emma, the surgery was successful, and she expressed her gratitude to the medical professionals who helped her through it, including Dr. Alexander Lyon and her surgeon, Dr. Ee Ling Heng, whom she praised for her professionalism and warmth.
Despite being unaware of the condition for so long, Emma remains optimistic and thankful for the wonders of modern medicine. She emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and the role of medical professionals in helping individuals like her lead healthy lives.
“I’m just amazed at the wonders of modern medicine and the spectacular people that save, fix, and help us every single day,” she concluded in her post. “What blows my mind even more is the spectacular people that save, fix, and help us every single day.”
Emma’s post has resonated with many fans, as they sent messages of support and admiration for her bravery and positivity during this challenging experience.
