John Dennett, one of the last surviving veterans of the D-Day landings, has passed away at the age of 101. He died peacefully on Sunday with loved ones by his side. Known for his bravery and dedication, Mr. Dennett was a key figure in Britain’s history, having participated in the largest amphibious military operation in history—D-Day.

A Royal Navy serviceman, Mr. Dennett enlisted in 1942 at just 17 years old, signing up against his mother’s wishes. He trained as an anti-aircraft gunner and was assigned to the HMS LST 322, a crucial tank landing ship that delivered military vehicles to the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

His efforts on D-Day included offloading troops, military equipment, and ferrying wounded soldiers back to Portsmouth. Mr. Dennett served in all major Allied amphibious assaults during the Second World War, including operations in North Africa and Italy.

Following the war, Mr. Dennett continued his service to the community. He founded Ashville FC in 1949 with his wife Joyce, a club that has thrived for over seven decades and now boasts youth teams and its own ground. His commitment to veterans was evident in his long-term involvement with the Royal British Legion and the Italy Star Association, where he was made president in 2019.

His extraordinary contributions were recognized with the British Empire Medal in 2022 and an MBE in 2023. Ashville FC paid tribute to him, calling him “a true legend,” while the Royal British Legion praised his strength and guidance.
