Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill was nearly on his way to the New York Giants earlier this year, before the trade fell through and Tranquill took a pay cut to remain with the Chiefs.
Tranquill, who joined the Chiefs in 2024, was the subject of trade talks as Kansas City looked to make some financial moves during the offseason. According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, the Giants were keen to acquire Tranquill before the start of free agency. However, in an unexpected turn of events, the linebacker opted to restructure his contract and stay in Kansas City.
Giants Attempt to Trade for Tranquill
The Giants were reportedly in talks with the Chiefs to acquire the 23-year-old linebacker, but the deal fell through after Tranquill decided he wasn’t ready to leave Arrowhead Stadium for MetLife Stadium. Tranquill, who was looking forward to another season with the Chiefs, chose to take a pay cut rather than make the move to New York.
The Pay Cut and Contract Restructure
In order to stay with Kansas City, Tranquill agreed to restructure his contract, reducing his base salary from $6 million to $3.5 million with $3 million guaranteed. The restructured deal not only gave Tranquill the chance to stay with the team but also allowed the Chiefs to free up cap space. This move was crucial for Kansas City, as it helped them make major signings, including the return of star tight end Travis Kelce, who agreed to a one-year deal worth $12 million.
The restructured contract for Tranquill lowered his cap number by $2.5 million, making it easier for the Chiefs to add more depth to their roster. In addition to re-signing Kelce, Kansas City also made key signings, including running back Kenneth Walker III, who was named Super Bowl LX MVP, and safety Alohi Gilman.
Tranquill’s Dedication to the Chiefs
Tranquill’s decision to stay with the Chiefs reflects his commitment to the team and his desire to continue contributing to their championship aspirations. Despite the interest from the Giants, Tranquill made it clear that he wanted to remain with Kansas City, and his decision ultimately played a significant role in the Chiefs’ ability to strengthen their roster.
As the Chiefs head into the 2026 season, Tranquill’s presence on the defense will be key as they look to defend their title and build on their success. His commitment to the team and willingness to restructure his deal exemplify the kind of selflessness and dedication that the Chiefs are known for.
