Kansas City’s latest rookie wideout, Cyrus Allen, is already feeling right at home in his new surroundings. The fifth-round pick from Cincinnati has stepped into the Chiefs’ rookie minicamp with a sense of excitement, thanks to some familiar faces who are helping him navigate this new chapter in his career.
In his first press conference with the team, Allen couldn’t contain his enthusiasm when he talked about meeting Chiefs’ superstar tight end Travis Kelce—another Cincinnati Bearcat legend. Kelce, known for his larger-than-life presence both on and off the field, wasted no time in welcoming Allen to the team.
“He hit me up right away and said, ‘Let’s f’ing go,’” Allen recalled with a laugh, clearly honored by the interaction with one of his idols. “He’s a Cincinnati guy, so it was exciting to chop it up with him for real.”
For Allen, it’s surreal to be in the same locker room as Kelce, who has become a household name in the NFL. Allen was quick to highlight the impact Kelce has had on their shared alma mater, with the tight end’s legacy making a lasting mark on Cincinnati. “Man, it’s crazy,” Allen said, laughing. “I think he got a lot of stuff named after him. I think the hotel we stayed at had a key card with his picture on it. I’m like, ‘That’s Travis Kelce! I wish I could get that treatment.’”
Teammates Turned Brothers: Jeff Caldwell Joins Allen in Kansas City
But Allen isn’t the only Cincinnati receiver bringing some Bearcat pride to the Chiefs. His former college teammate, Jeff Caldwell, also signed with the team last week as an undrafted rookie free agent. Caldwell, known for his raw athleticism and jaw-dropping skills, has one of the highest upside potentials in this year’s rookie class, boasting the second-best Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of any receiver in the last 20 years.
When Allen was asked about his fellow Bearcat, his praise was effusive. “Man, Jeff’s a dog. I ain’t gonna lie to you. He’s 6’5, 6’6…one of those heights,” he joked, clearly excited to reunite with his college buddy. “He’s talented. I was amazed he got signed here. I’m like, ‘Let’s go back to work!’”
For Allen, having Caldwell by his side during this transition period is a huge help, as the two have already worked together to learn the playbook. “It’s good to have a friendly face around, someone who knows what you’re going through,” Allen said. “We’re learning the plays together, so that’s good for both of us.”
Swimming in the Playbook: Allen Faces the Challenge of Grasping the Chiefs’ Offense
Despite the comfort of having Caldwell by his side, Allen admitted that learning the Chiefs’ playbook is still a major challenge. “I’m swimming a little bit. I can’t lie to you,” Allen admitted, but quickly added that he’s embracing the challenge. “But it’s good. I’ve been learning everything, learning different positions, what everybody’s got. That’s kind of how I like to learn.”
For Allen, the process is a lot to take in, but he’s committed to soaking up as much information as possible. “It’ll probably be a little harder for me, but it’s good. I’m learning everything, and that’s the way I want it.”
As the Chiefs continue their rookie minicamp through the weekend and gear up for Voluntary OTAs later this month, all eyes will be on Allen and Caldwell to see how their journey unfolds in Kansas City. The duo will have a lot to prove this offseason as they work to carve out a spot on one of the league’s most exciting offenses.
With familiar faces around him, Allen is ready to prove that he belongs, and Chiefs fans can expect a thrilling ride as he develops into a key player for the team.
